Always lots of wrestlers who are good at striking at WW.

Would've been cool to see the Johny Hendricks wrestling rivalry pour over the cage when they were both closest to their best.

GSP would have fucked him up something terrible. Then again, Askren did beat Lawler. I suppose it would be a matter of timing. But Askren is not a GOAT WW. GSP and Hughes both have better resumes. Woodley, Shields, and MacDonald also. Maybe even Fitch and Maia.

If Ben would have been a few years younger the sick spinning back fist known from gifs would have been even quicker and hit, knocked out Maia for instance

Ben Askren at the top of his game

“He would be champion,” Duke Roufus, head coach of Roufusport, told MMA Fighting. “He’d be the triple champ. ONE, Bellator, and UFC. I believe that. Unfortunately, circumstances and timing don’t work out. I’ve seen him do some special stuff in the cage and in practice ever since I met Ben. It’s just sometimes timing doesn’t line up in this industry.”

One major factor in Askren’s retirement was his doctors telling him he required hip replacement surgery. According to Roufus, the injury had been evident for sometime and it affected the fighter’s training camps. Though Askren himself has insisted he is not blaming the hip issues for his losses, Roufus saw a difference between Askren’s recent performances compared to years past.

“It’s been bad for a while. Honestly, training camps this year were hindered due to his hip. He’s just such a tough kid, just fighting through things. Not to make excuses, but it’s definitely affected him a lot.

“The toughest thing is timing. I wish that Ben would have been given the opportunity when he should have, to enter the UFC when he was coming out of Bellator. Everything worked out the way it did. I blame Bjorn Rebney [for] the way he treated that situation that caused Ben to not matter to the UFC.

“That being said, I wish Ben would have come into the UFC at that time. I think we would have seen the real Ben. Guys like myself and Tyron Woodley have talked about the special Ben. At that time he was untouchable.

“His stats are wonderful. Two-time world champion. Impressive record. What I like about Ben is the person he is as a combat sports athlete. He grew to be a big, popular fighter, and still has his own voice and personality at the same time.

“He never backed down from anyone and that’s a really powerful statement. Ben doesn’t budge from what he believes in and what he feels. I respect that about him so much.”

no. i have no reason to think he was out of prime. same thing could have happened in his prime. he could've beat them all out of his prime, if he was.

Unfortunately, we will never know. Seeing just how great (marketing-wise) he has been since joining the UFC they must regret not signing him sooner. I could see a Prime Ben beating Condit had he not got robbed against Lawler. However, I don't see any other scenario for him becoming champ honestly, maybe he could have eked out a decision over Woodley but GSP, Hendriks and Lawler are all terrible match ups for him.

This hip bullshit excuse for askren is pathetic as fuck. Dude is just a mediocre fan crushing one dimensional fighter that got exposed

He would be fortunate to even get a title shot, he would need to have the right fights for align for that to happen. Ben is just not that good to be on top of WW.

He literally was the same in every fight of his entire career ...no growth at all thats not the sign of an elite champion..prime or no prime there was no difference in his skill set

He was in his prime when he came to UFC and went 0-3. Just accept that for what it is. He's talented but not UFC caliber. No shame in losing to who he did but he was punching above his weight.

Missed the Lawler fight?

Imagine how badly prime Hendricks would've abused this dude on the feet, literal murder is what we are talking about here.

Not to mention the fact that Johny was a far better MMA wrestler.

Never beating Maia, ever.

Neither he or Chael has the tools because they can't beat him standing even if they keep it up which allows Maia to attack with reckless dis-abandon.

The best version of Askren was probably around 2013-2014, when GSP was gone, and it was Hendricks/Lawler/Rory on top.

The other major issue is USADA. Askren was almost certainly clean, and Hendricks was almost certainly using.

I would tend to vote no, although I do think he would be obviously better than his post-first retirement run in the UFC.

LOL@this Prime Askren bullshit. The guy was always a one dimensional blanket with Rousey level striking. Shit, Ben's striking makes Jon Fitch's striking look like Prime Andy Hug.

Yeah Ben had a good run in the minor leagues but that was his ceiling. Him getting his ass kicked has nothing to do with being past his prime, he just isn't a complete fighter. When you go from fighting Shinya Aoki and a bunch of guys who don't have Wikipedia pages in ONE FC to fighting top 10 level competition in the UFC... yeah that's a pretty steep learning curve.

Making excuses for Ben is just silly. He was undefeated, HAD NEVER LOST A FIGHT, before coming to the UFC, but once he gets exposed against real competition, well suddenly that means he was past his prime. Couldn't beat or even be competitive against Masvidal and Maia, but he would've beaten GSP!

LOL. Clown shit. Shit, he's just lucky he didn't fight Prime Lawler or he would've been one and done in the UFC. Even Herb wouldn't have been able to save his ass from that beating.

1) Askren was NOT in his prime when he came over, and he would have done better against most UFC fighters in his actual prime.

2) Even in his prime he gets absolutely murdered by the higher level wrestlers. He NEVER had to face wrestlers on the level of Hendricks, Koscheck, GSP, or heck even guy like Mike Pierce that could wrestle and had serious power, in his MMA career. I feel like all of them destroy even a prime Askren, his standup is way too limited to deal with opponents that could nullify his grappling to any extent.

maybe in strikeforce if he didnt fight nick

50-45?

Try 40-32 for 4 rounds and a 5th round finish

lol

you must be new

You had to nearly kill someone to get a 10-8 round when Georges was in his prime.

And GSP couldn't finish Dan Fucking Hardy on the ground in his prime
