Match Report
I went to Whitby vs Matlock this afternoon. The attendance was 408. Matlock started today bottom of the table and everyone knows we're in trouble. They came 100% to take three points back to Derbyshire and send us down in their place. They played hard, fast, physical football. Every tackle and challenge was heavy and there were elbows, barging, shirt pulling and the rest of it. They were lucky not to get a red card or even two. The ref was lenient and they only got two or three yellows. In fact one of our players got a yellow for diving (outside the box). Maybe Nicky Law, the Matlock manager slipped the ref a brown envelope beforehand.
However for once the taking the throw in from the correct place was enforced. 99.9% of the time the player takes it five or ten yards forward of where the ball went out, but once this match the linesman intervened and made the Matlock player go back and take it from the correct spot. When they try doing that they should have to take it from ten yards back from the original spot, and if they're less than ten yards from their goal line it should become a corner to the other team.
Ok this was a weaker opponent, but I think the squad had been working on holding possession and patiently building up through midfield, selecting passes rather than just defending deep and trying to strike on the break. That aspect of the game was better but our work in the final third was letting us down. Few quality chances. Our defence was solid though and the midfield were holding Matlock up the pitch much better off the ball, as opposed to our back line and goalie being swamped most of the time, as they have often been recently.
This was a well balanced game, with both teams fighting for their lives but neither able to really get the upper hand. I would give a slight advantage to Whitby though. We did hit the crossbar. This was a better performance, but if things don't improve on field we'll get relegated. Apart from the money situation. We still have 0 home wins this season, although the point has moved us up to 16th. Matlock ascend to 21st. A point on the road will mean a lot to them. A home draw against the bottom team in the league just isn't enough for us.
