It's just not going to happen.
Conor's rise was built on him continually setting himself up as the under dog and then performing, he thrived in this role as he ran a buzz saw through the feather weight division. A fortuitous back to back with Nate Diaz (at 170) followed by an even more fortunate bout with a favorable match up in Alvarez served to elevate him even further.
So much so that he parlayed it into a once in a lifetime payday and nothing to lose fight with Floyd Mayweather.
But that's just it, in all these fights the excuse was baked in, Conor was taking on a task where there wasn't much downside to losing.
A loss to 10 year undefeated Aldo? No big deal.
170lbs Nate Diaz? Short notice, not my weight class
Eddie Alvarez? 155lb title fight with no 155lb UFC wins
Floyd Mayweather? Greatest Boxer Ever (arguably) 9 rounds was a "victory".
But Khabib? A non glamorous opponent who will smother the shit out of you and make you look hopeless as you literally attempt to crawl away... a near guarantee that you will be taken down, and pounded on until you're just completely broken (and Conor DOES break) A fight that, if you lose (badly) will make you nearly irrelevant as a 155lb title contender.
Not a chance. Conor will sooner fight Tyron Woodley than take a zero upside fight against Khabib. It's just not going to happen, even if it's booked... Conor will find some way to get out of it and find a more favorable opponent.
The bottomline is that Conor simply exceeded himself, he can't follow up his own act and he knows it, and that's causing him to sit on the sidelines and act irrationally to remain relevant all while NOT fighting.
