Match Report
I went to Whitby vs FC United of Manchester today. The attendance was 761 - probably one of the biggest we'll have this season. There was a big queue to get in but with a season ticket I could go in the short queue. It was a very well balanced and stodgy game. Both teams defended solidly and there weren't a lot of quality chances, and fewer quality shots. Both teams sprang the offside trap effectively and disrupted their opponents' chains of passes well. I think there was only one card, a very late yellow and I don't know what it was for. The battle raged back and forth through midfield. We worked hard to get the ball to a striker in position but we just couldn't get through. There were very few dangerous crosses, or times when a striker got even a step ahead of their defender. But the same was true for them.
This was one of those matches that is just entertaining and balanced action but with no goals or anything dramatic. We have a lost a bit of striking power in the squad over the summer. FCUM are a middle to upper middle table team. A home draw and clean sheet against them isn't bad, but we need to build from this. Still waiting for the first home win of the season.
Whitby are now seventh and FCUM are 12th.
