Match Report
I went to Whitby vs Bamber Bridge today. The attendance was 401. It was a warm sunny day, I always find it a big incongruous to be watching live football at this time of year. Bamber Bridge's opera singer fan was back. Early in the game Whitby quickly took the initiative. However it was a jittery performance - not surprising for the first match of the season, but also not encouraging. Some of the passing, running and linking up were completely on point but some was like playing an FPS with 1000 ping. Sometimes the defence left big gaps. Both sides had some shots on goal early, but Whitby scored first at 14 minutes. Shane Bland our goalie had plenty of work to do today.
Bamber Bridge's 7 went down hard after he and our player went for a ball in the air at the same time, him with his head and our player with his foot.
It looked harsh from a distance but the ref was right there and didn't even give a card. Their number 7 stayed down for a while looking hurt, then sprang up and carried on playing as though nothing was the matter. After that the Whitby fans started booing every time he touched the ball, and cheering every time he made a mistake. After another heavy contact, which also did not attract a card, he seemed to hurt his leg, and got subbed off later in the first half.
The game stayed very open into the second half, which both sides continuing to attack effectively. However Bamber Bridge gradually began to take over, and scored at 54 and 75 minutes. Whitby began to struggle to get much of the ball and had to defend deep. After a promising start it seemed BB adjusted to the threat we posed and were just a step ahead in playmaking.
BB finished 16th last year (Whitby finished 12th), so to lose to them at home was not the start to the season we were looking for.
Bamber Bridge are fourth and Whitby now sit at 17th.
