Pre-Izzy Paulo Costa hype train was real

Costa holds the record for biggest in-cage weight in the MW division.

213lbs in fight night, which is fucking crazy.

Obviously if you are trying to bully your competition through weight cutting, you better have the most strict discipline but if he fails, I would not call that a lack of discipline. I would call it pretending to step into the cage bigger than literally everybody in the history of the weigthclass.

213 is indeed crazy but I doubt it's a record. Off the top of my head, I would guess prime Sonnen was probably somewhere in that ballpark.

I was a fan even after the beatdown but the silly excuses and pathetic weight miss really soured him for me. He can still win me back tho

This trailer is still hype as hell despite how the fight went down :D

If Im not mistaken, Sonnen was around 205lbs in the cage as a MW, maybe a bit more but not up to 213 for sure.

I dont know for certain if Costa holds the in-cage weight record in the division but he would be my picks.

A fellow sherbro did some work on it and Costa had the highest mark.

One of the most overhyped fighters in UFC history.

I do remember a few comments claiming that he was more technical than the old Chite Boxe guys, really I think quite the reverse he was more of a pressure brawler than they were.

If you mean by real he was all hype.

Overrated brawling headhunter who was lost when someone was not overwhelmed or didn't oblige him in a brawl.

All the hype was because of a high size advantage.
I remember when he fought Hendricks he looked 3 weight classes bigger. Of course some of that is because hendricks should have managed to stay at 170.

People still have PTSD from that fight claiming Costa fought out of character, lol. Izzy made him be out of character, Costa knew what he was in there with. Countered all day.

Huh?
Of course the hype train was real. It happened, we all saw it.
But a "hype train" is just that, people getting excited about a guy's potential.

But that's not why TS made the thread. I'm assuming you are suggesting he was as good as the hype, which he clearly wasn't.

Costa's hype did not pan out. He's wasn't as good as he was billed.

People on this board secretly really wanted to fuck Paulo Costa.
It's not a secret bruh.
How could you not want to fuck Paulo.
We're just jealous Izzy got to tap that first. Now we are left conflicted because Paulo let a dude with a titty do that to him.

It's not so much that Adesanya didn't brawl but that he refused to concede to Costa's pressure and move back into the cage.

Once Costa was faced with an opponent who wouldn't back up, he was totally lost.

Poor fella's fanbase has basically disappeared on Sherdog at this point.

It is very telling about the type of "fans" that post here.
I don't think a lot of people liked the weight stunt against Vettori.

Not that easy to find a 185lber who would not back up from Costa but anyways, Vettori is not one to back up and Costa didnt look "totally lost"; he went 5 competitive rounds with a guy who just went 5 rounds with the champ.
Which also shows this is false:

If you mean by real he was all hype.

He was indeed overhyped though, and relied on record setting weightcuts at MW that you can only make for so long

Kind of. I'm still a fan and was on the "hype train" but it was kind of ironic, for the most part, and fueled by Coster being funny on social media, having a fun style and being sexy AF (full homo). But no one genuinely thought he was unbeatable and master of MMA like with Zat right now.
