Probably a very newbie stupid question, but I figure you guys will know the answer so I'm going to ask it anyway :P

I have very good cardio (for my age :icon_lol:) and happily handle ten 2 minute rounds of intense bag work. However, I realised I only really train on the bag using combinations of at least two punches. I do try to hit it with as much power and body weight as I can, but I also try to use speed and this obviously reduced the force I can get behind each punch.

So yesterday I started working on just working on hitting the bag with single punches at full power. It was fun but half way through I have to admit I felt a bit stupid.

Is there any validity to this type of training, and if so, how do you alter your technique to ensure full power?

Once again, sorry if this is a daft question.

Don't focus on putting out power, focus on combination fluidity, spacing, and timing. If you have power you have it, but timing and technique have done me wonders in comparison to my power.

Lift weights. Resistance training is good for virtually athlete. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

According to Foreman, chop wood. And for Gods sake would members take these threads to the stand-up sub-forum.

Okay, fair enough. Apologies for putting this in the wrong thread.

Mods, can it be moved please?

Improve your maximal strength and then improve your explosive strength, preferably with plyometric exercises that mimics your sport's activity. Ie. punching with weights in hand, Med-ball slams, elastic band kicks, etc.

Anyone who says punchers are born not made are just not knowledgeable about human anatomy.

You have to understand where punching power comes from. The main muscles are glutes, hips, core( abdominal/tranverse abdominal wall/obliques) hamstrings.

The best way to develop these muscles are by doing wide stance squats(powerlifting style) and deadlifts.

I hit like a mac truck. Because i squat heavy with correct technique. Trust me, it can be developed.

Boxers have notoriously bad training techniques. Which is why only naturals develop that kind of power.

"The best way"
"I hit like a mac truck"
"Boxers have notoriously bad training techniques"
"Anyone who says... are just not knowledgeable" (anyONE is singular, btw)
"Only naturals develop that kind of power"

A sure fire way to develop power is to throw tens of thousands of punches, throw them explosively, and throw them with the best technique possible. Not all punches need to be power punches.

And that's not even that many punches. That's like, 100 a day for a year. No excuse not to do it.

Vids of punches like a mac truck or gtfo!

I personally think training single techniques for power is a valid idea. I think it gives some structure to your bag training and lets you really focus on the technique itself. For days like this, I'll set up my Gymboss so every minute of a 3 minute round I have 30 seconds where I use only one technique (say, a jab) and then 30 sec of whatever combinations I want. For kicks I like to finish my workout by doing maybe 50-100 per leg of say round kicks, changing legs every 5 reps and really focusing on good technique and power.
