He took 3 nightmare match-ups in a row and at his age... Really these are his top 3 nightmare match-ups. Can't think of anyone else.

When you reach the top of the division, you get tougher matchups. He got those matchups because he was successful previously. It only gets harder. That's the sport

Yeh I agree I want to watch another 5 round barn burner featuring Maia.

His fights are soooooo entertaining.

I appreciate Usman's talent but it is worrying that he's going 5 rounds with a forty year old.

Ya. I hope they match him up with a striker or another bjj dude. Not a wrestler.

Rampage seems to be getting the same treatment. Wrestlers only.

But... wrestlers freaking dominate

Blame it on his opponents. Most of Maia's opponents have made no sincere effort to try and finish him, while Maia moves forward trying to press the action. When Maia's opponents do try and engage with him, they tend to lose.

If you're fighting guys who are so terrified of entangling with you, but can't knock you out, don't expect a great back and forth. Maia can only do so much to make his opponent commit, and the fear of his ground game forces them to play it safe throughout.

nah Ill blame him.

Thanks though

Current WW champ went 5 rounds with, basically, same Maia

Yep Maia is not easy to finish, how many times he really got dominated bad? Not to many most of his loses are from formidable fighters.

Weidman and Anderson. His bad lost would only be Nate Marquadt because he got Koed. Anderson Silva could not finish him too.

You have a point but Maia is not some one easy to Finish.

Even though on paper Usman is bad match up for Maia, we need to consider that Usman's strenght which is wrestling can only be used as defense against Maia, Usman will have to rely to his lesser skill of striking to try to hurt Maia.

And with Maia you can't be too reckless and risk getting taken down, he only needs one to change the direction of the fight.

Yea I agree with you. He's a guy who will fight anybody. But Maia is the perfect example of insanity. He fought 3 similar guys and did the same thing for 13 rounds against each guy. He went for a single or double, got stuffed, entered turtle, and then his opponents stood up, or he laid on his back and waved his opponent in each fight like that would work.

Maia in the first round actually did pretty good. But then he got tired.

My biggest questions for Maia:
1) why not fake the takedown and throw a knee or front kick or hook, or.....something. Everybody knows you are going for a takedown so who better to fake it.
2) why not pull guard. He tried it once and was successful but only had 25seconds to work
3) why not throw leg kicks, or unconventional shots
4) As a veteran of the sport, why choose 3 of the worst match-ups possible if you are going to do the same thing over-and-over-and-over. It's very boring and clearly doesn't work against good wrestlers.

Poor Maia? I say poor fans having to sit through his boring ass fights!

You have to play safe with maia that's for sure. 1 mistake and it's very dangerous. Usman is a good fighter, but I think he demise will be when he meets a wrestler with better striking. Right now I don't see him with the ability to beat woodley, and honestly covington might be able to outstrike him as well.

Who knows what would have happened if the ref didn't reset them while Demian had a partial twister on.

If maia cant get the takedown he is a freakin bum what a fuckin snoozefest

Yeah it seems some fans are a bit over hyping Usman as some monster. We will see how his career will turn out.

Yup Usman might be in trouble if he gets to fight a wrestler with better striking or even a Striker with good BJJ Aldo Type fighters.

Poor casuals who don’t appreciate one of the last BJJ specialists in high level UFC competition. You will miss him when he’s gone.

The thing is you'd think he'd learn he needs better takedowns and gas tank after his lost title bout. If his opponent stops the initial takedown attempt, he can just wait for Demian to gas out and then try to get some points for decision win.

Wrong. He just didn't developed his stand-up grappling (yes the term exist) as Khabib and others more complete grapplers.
