If you want to use your logic, then no nation legitimately exists, no one is what they say they are and everything was at some point taken from someone else.

While yes, he is a South African national (they have birthright citizenship, so his child born anywhere else in the world would also be South African,) the term that his community uses is “Afrikaner;” which distinguished the ruling class of Dutch speaking ethnic Europeans from the indigenous ethnic Africans.

Back to relevance, I have only limited anecdotal evidence that reinforces the sentiment of my argument re DPP; so not a hill that I’m willing to die on.

And by all means, if you have experience with the wider MMA scene (outside of a microcosm of course) on the continent, then by all means I’d be interested to know what the rest of the continent (or even country) feels about the White Dutch(dialect/)English speaking Afrikaner.

When I was on Wall St, I had a number of South African (mostly white) clients.
Since we were always talking numbers, this topic in general never came up.
That said, they sure loved keeping their money in the USA and Jersey/Guernsey.

Japan is a closed off small island that has spent the majority of it's history relatively untouched by outsiders. National, ethnical and racial identity is easier to boil down into just a question of race in Japan because they lack racial and ethnical diversity.

I think you need to brush up on your Japanese history.

While Japan might not accept the white men who have lived in Japan for a generation or two, many people have come to accept the afrikaners who have been in africa for 300+ years as african, or the white arabs in north africa who have been there for 1,000 plus years as africans.

The same way everyone in brazil can be Brazilian and everyone from the us can be American, not just the indigenous people. It is because ethnically and culturally diverse countries tend to expand their concept of identity beyond just that of race, or at least acknowledge that it is only part of the equation. The dogmatic stubbornness of whittling identity down to nothing but race doesn't work in diverse countries.

Another poorly chosen comparison. The concept of different human races isn't comparable to two flat out different species. Also, again, you're working under the faulty assumption that race = identity of a whole diverse continent, when race is only part of it.

That said, this is a dumb discussion. I've talked about it with many africans and they themselves have varying degrees on what it means to be african, probably because they themselves are so diverse, unlike japan....

Nobody in Africa thinks white south Africans are as African as some random black guy in Nigeria or Ethiopia. Nobody. You'll see it once in a while in the media -- all for political points. But nobody in the real world actually thinks so. And this entire dispute between Dricus, Adesanya, and the rest perfectly illustrates the point. None of the black guys -- including the ones from Africa -- really think Dricus is African. They recognize him as South Africa.

“African” has a dictionary definition. I just read a whole thread of people trying to determine what they believe defines an African. It’s defined already.


African:

A person from Africa or relating to Africa or its people, customs, or languages.


DDP clearly fits into both definitions, it isn’t up to us. So do Izzy, Ngannou, and Usman. All four are Africans. I think the word people are looking for is Black.

For anyone still confused, someone from from west Africa has more genetic similarity to a white man than an East African - showing that your concept of an African race makes zero sense.
