So I just watched the matches. Some high level shit right there for sure.

But seriously nobody won? There is no way to determine If one of those matches had a winner.

I love grappling and am sometimes disappointed with IBJJF rules but this is ridiculous

I think they really need to have some huge payment incentive to make this non-decision grappling contests more exciting.
25% of full total purse for showing up, 75% for winning.
Loser also get an extra 25%.
This way guys get an incentive for risking it all, instead of being careful and worrying more about their reputation than about winning.

i dont care anybody won, ....there was high technique level, and they went for the finish many time, at such high level isnt easy to finish .....look how many time tonon went for the sub..... it was great event...

I can't care less if there's a winner or not, as long as they can put on good matches.

Focusing on the match itself rather than on the outcome is a valid mindset, but it depends on the ability of the event to create entertaining high level stuff.

I dunno, did you really feel like the competitors weren't going for it?

First fight of the prelims - Alain Pozo won by heel hook in the 3rd min

There was another sub in the prelims in the final second of the match!

I'm not saying they aren't trying to win, but the risk taking was really not as big. A balance between drawing and losing was made when taking risks, that's for sure.

I really did not care that it went to a draw

The fights in itself were really awesome, and mostly, you could tell who the better grappler was anyway.

If that were me, the fix would be forever on. Me and my opponent before match "Look the only way we're going to get paid our due is if one of us taps. It nothing's happening, in the last 30s, one of us is going to tap for no reason".

I don't really see it as a problem; people get to see a submission, and ego and/or greed will ensure the better grappler is the one who takes the top slot anyways.

Couldn't care less about the matches being draws. People whine about everything, so if there was a way to decide a winner you guys would whine about that too. The matches were good, and no one finished, so no one won. Who cares?

Also, this just goes to prove that the ruleset does not ultimately affect the outcome. Stop tweaking stuff in order to try to manufacture an outcome.

I agree with most of your statement. At the end of the day, we watch a sport to be entertained. I liken it to cricket, where players can play for 5 days with a draw being the result. It can be riveting stuff, but also boring. One of my best friends thinks it's the greatest thing on earth. Different strokes for different folks.

You buy the stream or enter the tournament knowing the potential result (draws). We all hope for a finish but that's not always possible.

I beg to differ that the ruleset does not affect the outcome. Competitors want to win and will prepare their gameplan around the ruleset to manufacture a result in their favour.

I tire of draws, which will be pretty common if the competitors are at a similar level and given the submission only ruleset.

With that said, EBI rules so there's always a victor would make today's draws less frustrating.

The matches I enjoyed... I can honestly say I would not have enjoyed them any more if there was a winner and a loser (except for AJ -- I would have liked to have seen him choked hard). Otherwise, the matches were exactly what I wanted to see: high level action without much stalling.

Although... if all the competitors were the same weightclass... have them fight each other, tournament style, and distribute points like so: loss is 1 point, draw is 2 points, win is 3 points. Guy with the most points wins the tournament.

I would like to see this once just to see if it increases the excitement of the matches.

If you want pure excitement, the answer might be to change the rules to favour the "submission from any position" aspect of Japanese grappling.
