Poirier's chin

He genuinely has high level boxing, stays calm when under fire and see's the shots coming at him. Probably top 3 in combination punching as well, if he has you hurt you're pretty much fucked. He's had some beautiful Nate Marquardt-esque Tekken combos before.

He did a pretty good job of deflecting or rolling with the strikes. He definitely got hit with some bombs though

I now really want to rewatch this fight.

When dustin lost to conor in their first fight, he was one of the examples i used to justify conors soft tko wins. Dustin went down, but wasnt out. Neither were a few other of conors wins. Only one conor got was aldo and it took aldo running into it to crystallize it.

what?

Johnson ko'ed him at 155.
So? Chin isn't like some finite video game attribute. These are real life fighters, not Street Fighter. You've obviously never been punched in the face.

Shots you don't see coming hurt you the most because you don't react correctly and your head gets rattled more, resulting in knockdowns and KO's more likely than just bombing toe to toe.

If you need an example, one that instantly comes to mind is Frankie Edgar when he fought Chad Mendes. Frankie has never been known as a power puncher and he didn't have any one shot KO's up until this point. Chad Mendes who had taken everything Aldo had to offer in his prime got KO'd by Frankie Edgar of all people. Why? He was looking down when that left hook connected. Its a cliché for a reason " it's the ones you don't see that hurt you".

Dustin has a great chin, not granite, but really good. Besides we shouldn't be celebrating fighters for their ability to take shots. It's good to know they have it in their back pocket, but counting in your chin shortens your life.

he didn't get hit clean once in that fight

His chin is not excellent. Proved by Michael Johnson.

He´s eaten SO MANY big shots since then, from Conman to Gaetje to Chandler. He has an amazing chin and great striking defense. Pretty objectively. Hunto was KOd as well. Guess he didn´t have an excellent chin either.

Nailed it. I´m glad DP CLEARLY has a great chin, but I´m *way* more glad that he has good striking defense and fundamentals.

You know, I think they'll keep Chandler around for as long as he's exciting. He puts eyes on screens and I can't see them cutting him after any of these fights.

I think he, and Conor, and anyone whose fights are must see TV, can continue to lose forever, more or less, as long as each loss makes the UFC good revenue. If anything, they'll convince him to take a step down in competition for one or two fights to build his record back up and pay him for it because he brings excitement and eyes to the events.

I could be wrong but I think he's protecting his job with these fights.

I agree, but if he keeps it up, soon he´ll be going in all-guns-blazing except get (t)ko´d after eating his first jab. It´s a slippery slope, and like you say, I´d prefer him to take a couple tune-up fights, as he´s CERTAINLY deserved it.

Yeah I think Chandler could've won if he'd decided to wrestle instead of put on a show, but man Poirier looked great. I hope they don't send him to the TS again...I hope Dariush gets the next shot after Volk
He tried to wrestled lmao, did you watch the fight dude?

Question is does he want that step down in competition and would he take it? He's been saying he's here for one reason only - to figh the top guys. Most of his fights with them are competitive. He may not win, but he's putting on good fights.

If they offer him a lower ranked opponent will Mike want that and be willing to accept it? I think they'd have to throw money at him for him to step down in competition but I might be wrong.

I think he knows he can´t/shouldn´t eat another L if he wants to ever sniff another TS, so he´d gladly take the step-down, win, and "get back on track". Or at least I hope that´s what he does, as he´s clearly fantastic to watch every outing. I´ll add that my boy Dariush totally deserves a TS next though. . . although I´m doubtful as to his success.

These are ppl who equate hitting harder with being better I guess? Chandler is FUN to watch fight though - I'll say that!
No doubt about that, if Chandlers fighting you bet your ass I’ll be tuned in. I just don’t think he’s as good as a lot of people seem to think.

He's a notch below Poirier despite taking him to the very brink 4.5 years ago while Poirier was in his stride and Justin hadn't hit his yet?

I mean, MMA Math isn't always great, but they did both just fight Chandler and Justin did it much better and easier. They have many common opponents as well that have had varying results between them (i.e Johnson KO'd Poirier while Justin KO'd Johnson, Charles submitted Justin in round 1 vs round 3 for Poirier, etc), hence why MMA Math isn't that great, but Chandler's a good example to show their present respective abilities as it's the same style for them to reflect their strengths against: whether they can force a stand and brawl. And Justin outstruck him much easier, defended the takedowns much easier, and got hurt less.

Maybe Poirier's the better fighter still. I just wouldn't bet on it.
you have very rose colored glasses on.

You bring MMA math into equation, and make it sound like all the analysis is based strictly on that. It's not.

Just a few small details to consider:
Poirier has a much deeper and better resume than Gaethje in UFC - FACT
Poirier is a much headier and technically sound fighter - FACT
Poirier beat Gaethje - FACT
Gaethje beat Chandler via Decision, While Poirier Finished him (and no it wasn't an easy fight for Justin, that's a fallacy) - FACT
Michael Johnson has that dynamite and has finished really good fighters on his resume, but also lost to half of them - FACT. He still will never touch Poirier's resume.

beyond being a fanboy, nobody will put Gaethje higher on a scale than Poirier right now. If Gaethje goes and beats 5 good opponents in a row, then you can re-evaluate, but right now the data and eye test gives you a clear picture.

Chandler fucked up by going for takedown after hurting Porier,Joe and DC were like its very smart. No its not,you hurt your opponent and go for a takedown?imagine if Alex did that after hurting Izzy.

Agreed. I tune in to all his fights, but NOT because of how good he is. That guy's fights always have some element of wild abandon and leaving it all on the line in them. Super exciting fighter so he can lose 10 more in a row as far as I'm concerned. If they're like this don't cut that man.

They are his brain cells to gamble. If his wife is ok with what he's doing to his brain, then so am I!

Dariush is getting the Leon treatment. It will come when THEY need him, sadly.

And we'll see what's more important to Mike - the show or the *hope* of the belt. Because he's not gonna win that belt but he seems to LOVE these crazy ass fights. Time will tell.

I worry for his brain cells but as I just said in my last post, if his wife is ok with it, it's none of my business.

I´m *way* more glad that he has good striking defense and fundamentals.

Noticed pretty quickly that when Chandler would take Poirier's back he would make sure and get his hooks in, but could never actually do anything as that left his base too unsteady and Dustin too easily able to move around. Was internally screaming at him to take the body triangle instead which was open for him.

What does Dustin do the moment he takes Chandler's back? Secures the body triangle.

Guess which one of them got the tap.

Yup all around. I´ll add that Poirier fought the safer the fight the entire time as well (for better and worse).
