Please give Ferguson his respect

He fought the same way he always does and lost to a better fighter in Gaethje, but I actually don't think he fought the same way he always does against Oliveira. He was definitely much more cautious and didn't just run headlong into exchanges like he always does; there were times where previously he would've committed to pressure, but he held back and let Oliveira take the lead. I think it had a lot to do with him just being more wary after the beating he took from Gaethje. That said, I still think he just lost to the better fighter and this version of Oliveira likely beats him regardless.

I do disagree that Tony isn't past his prime. I think he exited his prime before a lot of people realize, and it's been chipped away noticeably over time. He's been slowing down for years now because his style just isn't sustainable.

The MJ and Castillo fights were a long time ago, but they definitely still provide solid takeaways. The Castillo fight convinced me that Tony wouldn't be as big a threat to Khabib as he was being made out to be, and this loss to Oliveira pretty much killed most of my interest in that fight. I also referenced the MJ fight as to why I thought Gaethje would beat him. Tony's improved over the years for sure, but in a lot of ways he's been the same fighter with the same weakness for a long time.

Still, I think he's a quality fighter overall and has definitely been getting unnecessarily piled on after this loss. But hey, he's a brash, batshit crazy guy who comes off as delusional even for an MMA fighter, so I get it.

Olivera has been rag dolling people at 155, I knew he was going to man handle Tony

The truth is Tony has garbage wrestling, it has always been terrible and his stand up was always very sloppy

The reason you think Tony wasn’t himself against Charles was because Charles basically broke his arm in the first. Tony had no chance of winning after that armbar

But to fair, few more seconds in the first and Charles would have won by TKO arm break. Tony was not getting out of that. Tony couldn’t do anything in the second and third because he literally had one arm, he couldn’t extend his left arm at all

Relavent fighters who have lots of fans also gain lots of haters, always the case, is normle.

soo true. Some fans are pathetic. In the nba when shaq was terrible his last few seasons or when Jordan came back and played terrible no one ripped them apart because they credit them for how good they were in their prime and in the majority of their respective careers
Love this post, really. I can get how BJ Penn and Chuck get a bit of heat for the last stretch of their career, but Ferguson's done after two consecutive losses? Really? With a 16-3 UFC record?? Fighting two top guys? And really not fighting much differently than he usually does?Jeeeez...

The reality is, a lot of people underestimated Gaethje and Oliveira. Now they know, but instead of admitting that it was a mistake to underestimate those two guys, they say Tony's done.

ferguson definitely deserves respect. he's one of the toughest fighters out there with a never-give-up attitude and definitely one of the most entertaining. put on a lot of great performances and been in wars.

that being said, he's always had poor defense and it was his heart, chin and cardio that got him through a lot of his wins. he's been hit and rocked so many times because of this; so i think the "over-rating" comes from those who sees him as an elite striker. he's not; he's just one tough SOB who never lets up and that pretty much overwhelmed most of his opponents (will overwhelm a lot of current fighters still).

Big respect to El Cucuy as a fighter.

That said, he’s the exact reason why I don’t pay much attention to fighters outside the cage. Too much cringe.

Seeing all the Tony hate threads is inline with Sherdog lemming group think, what have you done lately, lost your a can and we’re never that good. The fact is he hasn’t been the same since his knee surgery, he was just able to get outside of the top 5 stand up opponents such as Pettis and Cerrone who both have a history of folding to pressure fighters.

What I find more hilarious is the Khabib hot tub club are mostly the ones making these threads, the guy who ducked prime Tony for years on end... a credit to Abdulmanap, who knew to keep his boy away from Tony until his physical prime window closed. Additionally when talking about overrated and padded records look no further than Khabib, who’s resume hasn’t looked great until since the McGregor fight. He basically fights only guys who are favorable stylistic matchups, then runs away because of he’s afraid to lose. Poirier and Justin are standup guys who are tailor made for Khabibs style, he won the belt from Iaquinta and has been so inactive that Kevin Holland has fought more times in 6 months that Khabib has fought in 3 years... let that sink in...LoL

See what I did there, anybody can talk shit to discredit any fighter and their accomplishments, even the greats... it doesn’t take much brain power, just unobjective thinking’s and severe fanboism. For the record I think Khabib is an all time great and would’ve likely beaten Tony, point is that doesn’t mean Tony never was a great fighter...

What’s going on with everyone here? People are ripping him saying he was never good and he is overrated etc. he lost too a beast of a fighter in Olivera at almost 37 years of age after taking a beating from gaethje. Ferguson is one of the toughest guys in the world and at one point of time beat the best fight after fight. While guys like chandler duck everyone Ferguson steps up and fights them. Before this fight was made I am pretty sure no guys in the top 10 wanted too fight do Bronx. Of course when ufc offered it too Ferguson he stepped up and almost got his arm broken as well as losing badly but he toughed it out. Give this man his respect and remember how good he was in his prime.

Dude, he lost TWICE in a row! He's clearly an overrated chump who got exposed after years of fighting tailor-made opponents. He's still in his prime, he just failed to evolve.

No, no, no. I'm kidding. He's a beast. And what did you expect from Sherdog? Did you think it's even possible for the trolls to not start shitting on a great fighter when he falls off? I'll tell you a secret: it isn't.

It's Sherdog. Anyone who loses was always trash and just got exposed.

Put some respekk on his name, playboi

Props to the man for being a though mofo.
However, from a technical standpoint, he was never that good. He has very good jits, decent wrestling, and very poor striking (especially when it comes to his defense). He came that far thanks to his cardio, toughness, reach, and craziness.

No. He has fought dirty for years, but only recently have all of his ex-fanboys started to admit it.

Mexicans on this board be like

"snif snif, respect my fighter"

Lol

If Tony conducted himself with more class he would win more people over. You can't defend scum.

I think he was way overrated. A lot of other people do now as well.

Tony fought the same he always does against Gaethje and Charles

Tony isn’t past his prime, he’s been knocked down by many people before Gaethje and almost KO’d several times too

Gaethje and 155 Charles beat any version of Tony

Have Tony fans even watched the MJ or Castillo fights? <Lmaoo>

I agree with this. Gaethje can stand with Tony all night long and get the better of him. Charles can also take Tony down at will and ground and pound him or submit him. Unfortunately, Tony lost his aura of invincibility and people figured out how to beat his style. The gig is up for Tony. I still admire him very much. I love his competitive spirit. #Respect

Tony is a douche but I respek any fighter for stepping up and putting it all on the line. It was fun as hell to watch him throughout the years and whatever his decision is, it was a damn good career.
