Playing cards for a living with a family is a rough way to go. But the guys who are good enough get the props from their peers for it.

I know a person that plays poker on line and the casino as a job . He makes great money. Says he averages about 3 k a week.

He just says it's all about being disciplined and just waiting on a hand to trap. He preferscon line as A. He can play from home and play 3 tables at a time. But he also loves 2/5 at the casino as most folks play fast an loose so he can just wait and play passive / aggressive an tripple up most times out. He swears by playing 2/5 over higher stakes as once you get there it's a different game.

I could never do it just not disciplined enough to just fold for hours .

Poker players don't play against the house like other casino games so the casinos must take a cut somehow. Casinos exist to make money. How much of a rake do the casinos take for poker? They supply the table, the cards and the dealer. If they take a percentage of the pot and the pots are small, they can't make much money at the low limit tables because there isn't much money being played. Texas hold'em probably plays more pots in an hour than other forms of poker so if the casino takes a percentage of each pot they might get more pots but they probably don't have as many players staying in the hands.

In the tournaments, a portion of the buy in goes to the house. In the biggest tournaments, the casinos probably get sponsorship money for televised tournaments that also helps the bottom line but don't make nearly as much money as slot machines.

My parents and aunty arrives today and my brother/sister-in-law is meeting up with them. I should ask my brother if he is going to play one of the smaller events. He made a lot of money playing online poker back in the day before it was banned. I'm talking 6 figures type of money as a side hustle. Back then he could instantly tell you every out/% of him winning and knew every strategy in the book. That was when Texas Holdem was just getting popular so many people would play even though they didn't really know the game so it was easy to win on average. He would have 4 games up at once and play 1-3 hours at a time. He said every session he played he profited 3 out of 4 times and just gradually accumulated over the years. I honestly think till this day he could have been a pro back then. Now a days everyone knows the game so there is definitely much more luck and risk taking involved.

I used to be pretty decent at HoldEm, played at Trump's in AC and failed dismally, nerves ruined me. I used to enjoy watching WSOP and the celebrity games, I'll check it out again.

I played a few limit games and tournaments in Vegas, but it takes up so much of your time. I prefer just to play with friends and have a friendly wager. Back in college we would play at least 1-2x a month.

This is how I used to enjoy it, with friends. We'd wager a fiver each so no high stakes, it was just for fun. Soon as it got serious I lost my nerve, won't do that again. I wanted to do a tourney in Vegas but it can take hours of your time if you're there on vacation and wanting to enjoy the city so didn't do it.

Dont do it. I lived in Vegas 30 years and they run 3-4 man teams on every cash table. Hard to win when everyone calls u'r all in AA because they split if they win back in their van..and they always win 3 against 1,1,1,1,1 I dont care what you got...You're gonna get rivered 9/10 times..whole bunch of other tactics you can do with a team I won't even go into..sufficed to say Prime Mike Tyson could not beat 3 pro boxers at same time and neither will you beat 3-4 great poker players at same time

I'd go friendly like a buddies house or tournaments only..no cash games

I wasn't quite at that level but I was close. I was pulling 1500 per week playing 4-8 hours per day. Greatest time of my life...nothing spends like won money.

Unfortunately I spent years making few hunge a week until I finally moved up in stakes and realized the players are just as bad. After 6 months of big money they shut down online poker.

The quality of your play comes down to discipline and skill. I used to play often for fun and that's it. I laugh at those who can play it for a living. It's a disgusting game, if you really think about it , and is still gambling no matter how you look at it. The giant pot that you took down from seats 3 and 4 is a good feeling and sense of accomplishment when you're on your way out of the casino. Those guys who you beat will have to go home and explain to their wives why their kids won't get new clothes and a vacation anytime soon. If you think about it, most of the times at the table, all you see are miserable people on a losing streak. It's kind of sad to me. That's why I could never play it for a living even though I've done well in the past.

Your friend is right about smaller stakes being a different game, especially limit. Those fucks will just call all the time and suck out on the fucking river. The no limit tables just have a bunch of fucks that go all in pre-flop almost every fucking time.

I thank the UFC from keeping me from a life of gambling. Many many many years ago, I decided to take a bus to go watch a UFC event. I thought I would watch UFC and gamble a little. I took up poker as a hobby and was pretty good at it, but eventually left it behind for exactly the reason you guys mention. Cardrooms were degenerate shitholes full of tragic life choices. I was choosing to be around people I otherwise would have nothing to do with, for the sake of playing cards. Not worth it.

I think its like any other vice, where people love to point to the 'responsible' side while ignoring all the other baggage.
Its PERFECTLY FINE to drink in moderation.

MANY PEOPLE handle those things, responsibly and in moderation... but peel back the 'perfectly fine' layer to see what lies beneath and its a raw, pulsating blob of gross with lot of sad and depressing shit that you would pray your kids never got involved with.

They've very beatable, though, for that same reason. You just have to accept your wins will be ground out over time and you'll get sucked out on, a lot, along the way but play tight and right and you'll average out boring profit.
