[PIC] Benson Henderson really a featherweight?

Well what if he works on his striking then?
Closing the distance, footwork, headv movement etc.
When you look at Bendo's skillset, nothing really stands out.
Maybe his GnP only...

He already has the physical tools to be a great fighter but his skills aren't on par imo

going down in weight is not always the answer to succes.

Bendo is a great wrestler/grappler. He placed 3rd at the IBJJF world championships as a brown belt last year, higher than Nate Diaz. And he also has a good wrestling background.

Yeah I meant it more in a way that on paper he is very well rounded, but in MMA I don't consider him great at anything. I would rather see him specializing on an aspect in MMA instead of going down to fw (which he can't make btw)

Big deal, he's taller. Rumble hardly dominated at WW, and the guy was titanic compared to the division.

Bendo will possess a significant strength advantage vs Diaz.

Diaz is better at JJ and striking than Bendo and likely will have similar strength levels given they cut roughly the same amount of weight. So I disagree with you thinking he has more significantly more upper body strength.

The people thinking Bendo is going to out muscle Nate are the ones who are going to be the most shocked I think. Nate is a big LW now. He's bigger now than when he fought at WW.

That's weird considering they both competed at the IBJJF world championships last year and Bendo placed higher than Nate.

Benson always looks like that, it's the oak trees he has for legs that make him a LW

Lol, with Bendo a "featherweight", I guess I've seen it all on Sherdog.

I'm not sure how exactly you prove having upper leg mass is good here.

If you can have "pure technique" and sacrifice muscle on your legs and put it into your shoulders, traps, arms, etc then that means you'll be more powerful in the clinch and for boxing, etc.

punching power doesn't come from your arms but from your legs and especially glutes(your ass).
Jones ragdoll people because he is more skilled than they are, not because he is stronger.
He doesn't pack a punch on the other hand, he inflicts most of his damage through lots of strikes and sharp elbows.
You also need tons of leg strength to lift people up to slam them like Rampage or Matt Hughes.
Guys with big legs that are successful
Rampage
Phil Davis
Cain Velasquez
Bendo
GSP

Not to mention others like Palhares, Mark Hunt(somewhat successful lately)...

So one tourney and slightly higher placing makes it a rule? And they didn't even directly compete? Nice. Anyway I'm talking JJ in regards to MMA. Though I think Nate would beat Bendo with a gi regardless.

Nate has more submission victories than Bendo and recently submitted Miller who had never been submitted before. Bendo on the other hand has 5 decisions in the UFC so far. Just sayin'

So out of ~300 fighters you can name 6 or 7 with big legs. By the way any heavyweight having big legs is irrelevant as they don't have to cut weight.

The best striker in the UFC right now is probably Anderson Silva right?

Where are his big thick legs? Why are most of his best punches counter punches when he is walking backwards and such? If GSP and Bendo have such thick legs why do they have so little KOs recently? GSP even admitted he doesn't have the KO power of another fighter recently. Doesn't that go against your idea that punching power comes from powerful muscly legs? Yah?

As far as I see in my educated opinion thick legs are good for powerful but slower strikes, and for rushing take downs. Now GSP is great at a take down rush, as is Henderson, Davis, Cain. Wonder if that's a coincidence or not. I'm not saying legs don't come into punching power, I just think you over estimate the amount of muscle you need to F someone up with a punch. Maybe look toward the more obvious thing these thick leggers have in common, wrestling and take downs.

Bendo is not "a great fighter" and is too small for lw!

Hahaha! This is awesome.

Nate is taller and wider. Benson is a big dude himself.

Umm.. He is the LW champion and has success at LW. He's a LW.

You belong at any weight class you can make and have success at.

I swear you guys obsess over weight more than women.

To be honest I always thought Ben was an oversized lightweight and Nate barely made lightweight. Holy shit was I wrong

Agree. I'm just saying it looks like he would have more success with his frame at FW.

Ben is short and average reach so looks well muscled in the arms. He has a decent body building physique in my opinion. Compared to Nate who looks too lean in some ways in the same body building comparisons.

However Nate certainly is at the upper range for cutting to LW with the amount of muscle he has now. Doing 25lb water cuts is pretty much the edge and that's what he's doing these days. Bendo is in the same boat at the moment.

The reality is though that certain body types are more ideal for fighting at certain weights than others. 6 footers can now cut to LW with good strength and utilize their reach and height extremely effectively. Which pushes the guys shorter and with less reach down further if they want to be able to compete relatively fairly.
