So PFL paid all the tournament winners 1 mill last year, and has the same tournament lined up for this year, while also paying the regular purses for every fight. None of the guys that won (sans maybe Lance Palmer) would be anywhere near top 15 in their category in the UFC. There’s also guys who are likely to repeat their performance and win another million, making something like 2.5mill in 8 or so fights?

Not even the K-1 grand prix in its heyday gave out 1 million to the winner, and it had insanely popular fighters, not relatively unknowns. Not to mention they used to fight in front of 30-40k people while there’s maybe 2-3k in attendance tops at PFL.

Yet the unranked to bottom top 15 guys in the UFC are still mostly on what, 20/20 30/30 deals at best? Had any of those fighters been allowed in, they would have likely been favorites to win their weight class bracket.

I’d be a bit outraged if I was fighting in the “premier organization” having harder fights in bigger shows but getting paid 1/10 of a PFL tournament winner, while also being a more skilled fighter than him... It’s like playing in the major leagues but getting paid less than those in the minor leagues. A bit ridiculous imo, especially since WSOF was previously viewed as UFC’s feeder league.

What do the PFL losers get? Nothing?

Consider the lesser level of competition in PFL + the $1 mil winner payday.

I wonder if they kept any expensive guys out so they could afford the $1 mil final prize.

PFL sustainability vs. UFC sustainability

They have network deals with the biggest sports stations in both Canada and US (TSN and ESPN), same as the UFC (even if they are not on the same scale). Unlikely that they would be unsustainable.

They get paid their regular show/win money too. In some cases it's not far off what their UFC counterpart gets.

PFL has 10 fighters, UFC has 1000...that sums it all

Not exactly. But if I was a fighter, I'd rather face weaker competition in a 10 player knockout tournament rather than stiffer one in a 100 player one (UFC has about 600 fighters on the roster) if I was fighting to win a million.

what nobodies says is what the guys make who lose or if the winners get paid thru out the year.

They do get paid; it's not slavery. IIRC Lance Palmer was on 25/25 or something like that, which is not too bad, assuming they also get their own sponsors and the like on top. From what I remember most tournament guys were getting something like 10/10 to 30/30. Still, with your own sponsors and a pretty high chance to win one mill, they are getting much more than guys significantly better than them in the UFC.

How is the PFL getting all that money and how long will it last? Because the ratings are not good at all.
