Petr Yan's Style

If I could fight like any active fighter, I would wanna fight like Yan. Primarily an excellent striker who can also grapple if need be. He can pressure his opponents till the end of the fight.

Yan is still super young and will continue to improve.
yeah, idk, Valentina looks like she's having the most fun out of everyone though.

Despite his technical prowess, Petr Yan manages to keep his style fun, exciting, and lethal, while being calculated and highly defensive.

The most similar fighter to him would probably be Valentina, but she fights much weaker opposition excluding a few like Holm/Nunes.

In both cases, both fighters have trained meticulously for a long time, Valentina longer than Yan, and both seem to train at Tiger Muay Thai.

EDIT: I watched this too many times. Landing a spinning move so precisely takes a tremendous amount of skill.

He's incredible, IMO top 5 p4p and he might prove to be #1. He's built such an amazing skill set around his boxing base. He's got kicks from both stances to attack outside punching range and elbows to attack in the clinch while being smothered. His balance and scrambling is incredible as well. He's never more than one step behind in the grappling and when he is behind he's always working to not only improve position but even reverse. Incredible fight IQ as well, he knows how to exploit the most minor of mistakes. I don't believe we've ever seen anyone quite like him.
Yan is by far my favorite active fighter.

He is also the best striker by far.
Debatable but I agree with you. I think Sandhagen is one of the best as well but even he was a step behind Yan.

There's some kind of animalistic style in how Petr fights. It's like he's playing with his food. His opponents are legit but he pressures them badly and breaks them.

Valentina is having fun bcuz she's beating on fighters who absolutely suck. She's a very good fighter yes, but her division is very weak. Whereas Yan's division has very good fighters.

His boxing is what sets him apart, the value you get from boxing is extremely underrated in MMA, from his defense to understanding of distance

His style reminds me of Arthur Abraham, high guard and just relentless pressure. All of Abrahams fights would be the same: start slow, let the other guy win rounds and then turn up the pressure and finish him.

He's up there. I think Gane, Izzy, and Wonderboy deserve to be in the conversation, but Yan is definitely up there with them.
Whittaker and Volk too

The best part about Yan is his fight plan and mentality. He is willing to stick to it even if he knows the first round might not look good for him, he is willing to give up some shots to make reads and he doesn't get his ego control him so he doesn't chase even when behind on the scorecard. The fight vs Sandhagen and Aljo are the perfect showcase for this. He wont offbalance himself to chase a knockdown and expose openings, he won't get baited into chasing instead of cutting off the ring even when he is missing. He just puts in the work and makes the adjustments, he believes his plan is going to work even in the face of doubt. The technical skills he displayed can be taught, they aren't even that crazy or advanced, its his mental game that is so strong combined with the skills to follow through that makes him a killer.

Petr Yan is phenomenal. The guy puts in the work trains in Dagestan, Thailand, etc

Petr Yan is the real deal. He has technique, composure, durability, and versatility.

He's a simple man, signs a contract, beats the shit out of people in a beautiful fashion, no need for antics because when you see the name Petr Yan on the card, you know its going to be a great display of violence.

He is the best boxer in MMA.

Aldo in his WEC/early UFC run was slightly quicker. His current state might be in part due to the motorcycle injury he had as well as wear and tear. That version of Aldo would put up a better fight against Volk/Max/Yan.

Prime Aldo:

He's not as quick because he's older. I used to run a 4.2 sec. 40 when I was 18 and now that I am 30 my 40 is like a 4.4

I'm really impressed with how he fights in the pocket. He just floats in there, ready to adapt to flurries, level changes, etc., with relative ease.

Yans boxing and muay thai are top notch. He's all around great at what he does

Yes I am serious. They have similar technical proficiency and use a lot of the same striking techniques, must be the Tiger MT influence. There is no one more similar to Yan in that facet in the current roster.

Completely different fight styles even if have similar technique/training backgrounds in some ways.

As others noted Yan was a legit amateur boxer and his style is clearly heavily influenced by that, while Valentina is a lifelong muy thai fighter that heavily favors kicking techniques.

Valentina is far more of an alternating outfighter/clinch-grappler while Yan is a pressuring boxer-puncher.

So it’s an odd comparison to make since there are dozens of fighters that fight more like Yan than Valentina, even if they have some similar skills and applications of technique.

The style makes the fighter who they are, the skills/technique are just the tools to create the art with - they aren’t the art itself (in a fighting context).

You forgot Aldo. Aldo with a gas tank beats Yan. I said it and stand by it.
Nah not really.

Thats just being stupid. Thats like saying that Sandhagen and Aljo with a gas tank beats Yan.

Yan's whole style is to break you down, download the data and turn it up at the end.

Aldo's kicks did give Yan some problems, and then Yan figured him out and started putting his combinations together

Yan is the type of fighter I would be scared to fight. Maybe I'm a pussy, but I think his drowning style and serial killer like calmness when giving people brain damage would make me shit my pants if I was standing across the octagon from him. Same goes with Jiri.
I'd would be more worried about Yan cheating again if I were ever to get in a fight with him. You know if it were a street fight, Yan would pull out a gun, that is the type of cheat he is.
