Are good come fight night?

One of my friends/training partners had his first ammy fight last night and he looked like a monster. He's a 145er and he just went in there a mauled the guy winning by first round tko like 2 and a half minutes in. I didn't know where it came from because to be honest in training he kinda sucks. He's pretty timid in stand up sparring and when we roll he has good takedowns (he's a wrestler) but once it's actually on the mat he's not the best and can get swept/subbed by most blue belts. On fight night he was totally different though. Very aggressive in stand up, caught the guy a few times then took him down, passed into mount, and pounded him out. I had never seen him look so good.

My question is do you guys know anyone like this? Any ufc fighters like that?

Some people are just gamers. I know I'm pretty much sh!tting my pants right before I step on the mats, but once I'm on the mats... I'm comfortable.

it pays to not be the best person in the gym. If you're training with killers and then you get thrown in the ring with a lesser fighter you're gonna destroy him 9 times outta 10

A whole lot of people have said Anderson Silva goes about 20% in the gym.

I don't think anyone who "sucks" in training is amazing come fight night. There are a lot of guys that don't always give their best in the gym though.

I guess sucks is a little to harsh because he is a good athelete but he's very timid in training and almost afraid to get hot bit last night he are some shots and loved it and just looked like an animal

It's more often that the gym bully actually sucks. I have known a couple of those. They are very comfortable in that environment, and they are used to going harder than other people and having their way. They are like Cops that think they are tough when they slam people down and never get beat up, they don't realize that the other people just are not trying their hardest for obvious reasons..

I have never seen somebody that "sucked" in training go in and wreck sh*t on any high level.. But I have see guys that thought they were bad azz in the gym look timid and lose when somebody else was actually trying to hurt them.

I don't think this is as common as a fighter who is amazing in the gym but rather inconsistent in competition.

Some guys are timid about going 100% on guys they know and have to see every week. Then they get in the cage with some dude they have never met, and he's trying to take them out. It just triggers a different instinct in people. Less f***s given when it's going down for real.

Yeah that's pretty much what it is. Some guys don't really like beating up their friends. But just cause you're nice with your boys it doesn't always mean you won't turn it on in a real fight.
