Holly Holm is not a counter-striker. She never has been, with the one notable exception of the Ronda fight. Holly is a high-volume outfighter that likes to lead, she has never looked good countering- watch the Pennington fight. She is terrible at sitting in the pocket, and she has very weak punches. She needs her opponents to run their own face into her punches to hurt them. She looked like a good counter-striker against Ronda because Ronda made it easy as fuck for her to do so. If you've actually watched her fight against opponents other than Ronda, most of the time Holly just throws pitter-patter punches into the air mixed in with the occasional kick chained off of a combo, which is the only way she can reliably do damage against a savvy opponent.

Cyborg isn't the worst matchup for her, but she's a pretty bad one. Unlike Ronda, Cyborg has actual striking technique to back up her power, and has a decent amount of ringcraft in relative terms. Holly does not want to get forced into trading in the pocket, that's one of her least comfortable areas in the standup game. If she gets forced into the pocket with Cyborg, she will get lit the fuck up. Cyborg's striking is closer to RDA's than it is to Ronda's, and that is not what Holly wants to deal with.

This is all on top of the fact that Cyborg is fucking Marcelo Garcia on the ground compared to Holly, and is even bigger and stronger than her, which she's never had to deal with before.



To reiterate: Holly Holm is not a counter-striker, and never has been. She is a point-based, outfighting volume striker who has to lead to outland a savvy opponent.

edit: Forgot to add, Holly has 35% striking accuracy, which puts her near the bottom of WBW. She relies on volume, not accuracy, because her distance management is rather poor.

Holly is a counter striker, she was forced to go first against Shevchenko (World Muay Thai Champion).

Cyborg is a bezerker who charges forward throwing combinations relentlessly. So far, Holly done extremely well against that particular style.

Better hands (yes, I said better hands), way more power and even if she's losing the striking she can pretty much take Holly down whenever she wants and completely destroy her on the ground. But the majority of posters here hate Cyborg and talk like she fights like Diego Sanchez just running face first into punches over and over. When she's actually a decently patient fighter who works punching and kicking combinations off of her powerful jab. Rumble Johnson is a decent comparison but I feel Rumble is a better striker and Cyborg has much better cardio and ground game

Cyborg's aggression would play into Holly's strengths. Not saying she would win, but I give her good shot.

Go back and rewatch her fight with Leslie smith she wasn't being overly aggressive.

Although it will fall on deaf ears, I'll remind TS Cyborg & Valentina are different people and the success of one has no effect on the results of another.

even though vs and cyborg are different fighters cyborg has the skill to exploit holms flaws: she has the footwork, clinch game, great counters, throws body shots and the power to put her away or wear her down. And holm can't grapple to save her life. And cyborg has better hands than holm.

You're also probably completely unaware that the level of competition Cyborg has faced is not precisely stellar

That would be my biggest concern for cyborg how she adapts to better competition. I don't think she'll run through ppl the way she did in invicta .And even tho cyborgs competition isn't great -Ronda,Pena, cat,holly, miesha have never faced someone like cyborg either. By no means am I'm saying cyborg is unbeatable but sometimes u can't tell how someone will do in the UFC based on the level of competition.
Even in that fight it was competitive. She was throwing baars and hitting her with power shots. I don't think holm can handle her power for 25min could be wrong tho .Cyborg has improved a lot since her suspension. Go back and rewatch her for fight with smith. She was more patient measured used great footwork.

She was more patient for sure and I think she can hang and possibly beat the top girls in the UFC, I'm mostly arguing with people who think it's a foregone conclusion so and so will win and how, if there's anything certain in MMA is that results are uncertain. I do hope to see her fight some top competition in the UFC so we can put all speculation to rest.
