Hi,

I have a question that I'm hoping someone with a wrestling background or a good knowledge of takedowns might be able to answer.

I've only ever trained Jiu-Jitsu and (being from Ireland where there isn't a big wrestling scene) I don't really have the option of joining up with a wrestling club.

I've practiced changing level and shooting for double and single legs a few times. However, I've seen some footage in the past of people practicing this by repeatedly shooting across the mats (i.e. shooting with the right leg and immediately shooting with the left without standing up again in between). I've seen some wrestlers do it at ridiculous speeds and with ridiculous penetration (right-left-right-left-right etc) but I don't really know if there's a specific technique to doing this.

I was wondering if anyone knew the name of this training drill so I could search for tutorials or if they have any footage themselves. Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

I’ll pull something up when I get home. The point of the duck walk/penetration step drill is to get you comfortable going “knee over toe” to hitting your knee after a level change and step. As well as getting comfortable below 90 degrees and not staying on the knee. The purpose of that being to bring your hips to his in good position.

The biggest thing to understand is that the overall goal is to bring your hips to his

Thanks... Even having a name for the drill so I can look it up is a great help.

The playlist in on my channel if you link to it

Not sure if it has a name or not... we just call it working your double, working your shot. "Shadow wrestling" is another thing you can do to work your shot/penetration step

If you don't have someone to critique your technique I wouldn't advise doing it though. Trying to take full speed shots across the mat with sub par technique is a good way to blow out your knees or Fuck your ankles up.

Start at a snails pace and build up over time.

Thanks... I'll be working on it slow for the foreseeable future anyway.

Watch this playlist with an open mind and ears

Hi, I just got a chance to watch through the full playlist and they were extremely helpful. Thanks for posting. It will take some time to really internalise it but the drills were excellent and having a resource to look back on is exactly what I needed. Thanks again.
