In one of the threads on Reddit on this news, the 1st commenter said he first read it as : Women's protection law is Islamic. When he realized that the women's protection law was deemed UnIslamic he couldn't wrap his head around that kind of logic.

' A powerful Pakistani religious body that advises the government on the compatibility of laws with Islam on Thursday declared a new law that criminalizes violence against women to be "un-Islamic."

The Women's Protection Act, passed by Pakistan's largest province of Punjab last week, gives unprecedented legal protection to women from domestic, psychological and sexual violence. It also calls for the creation of a toll-free abuse reporting hot line and the establishment of women's shelters.

But since its passage in the Punjab assembly, many conservative clerics and religious leaders have denounced the new law as being in conflict with the Muslim holy book, the Koran, as well as Pakistan's constitution.

"The whole law is wrong," Muhammad Khan Sherani, the head of the Council of Islamic Ideology said at a news conference, citing verses from the Koran to point out that the law was "un-Islamic.

And we have this little gem here:

' Fazlur Rehman, the chief of one of Pakistan's largest religious parties, the Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam, said the law was in conflict with both Islam and the constitution of Pakistan.

"This law makes a man insecure," he told journalists. "This law is an attempt to make Pakistan a Western colony again." '

I've mentioned this before : Islam has soo much popularity amongst many cultures because it emboldens patriarchy and tribalism. Islam is the most powerfull justification and tool men have to suppress women with.

The problem with Islam is that it has followers that actually believe in Islam.

Islam gonna Islam.

Funny considering that a little over 100 years ago women in islamic countries had more rights than women in northern european ones.

Things can change really quickly for bad or good.

Oye, if I had a nickel for every 19 year old prick who starts talking about Western Imperialism every time Pakistan comes up at my university... Most of them women, oddly enough. That's a country that could use some freedom.

The unfortunate thing about women's rights in the Islamic world is not that they've failed to evolve over the centuries, its that they've actually gotten much worse. Before it was certainly true that all things equal a women had fewer rights and more restrictions than a man but what was also the case was that other distinctions were important as well such as generational and class distinctions. I read an interesting anecdote once about a ferry in the Ottoman Empire that was segregated by gender according to the law but the local citizens were outraged that this segregation extended to older women as well because generally speaking older women were much less restricted. In fact young men were restricted. Sure the leash was longer than that of their female peers but young male aggression was seen as a similar threat to the social order as young female sexuality and the older generations, both male and female, were expected to keep the younger ones in line.

What happened was the Muslim world turned the issue of women's rights as a microcosm for their resistance to so called Western cultural imperialism. "If the West liberates their women then we will subjugate them even more!" and thus the other factors that interacted with a person's social standing and their rights/restrictions like class and age were slowly eclipsed and forgotten as the gender distinction became ever more important. I point to this quote from the article
"This law makes a man insecure," he told journalists. "This law is an attempt to make Pakistan a Western colony again." '
Nowadays its not uncommon to hear of very young boys chastising their very own mothers for their dress and young Muslim boys run amok, doing stupid shit and engaging in violence and generally making society a worse place.

have the majority of civilians also agreed with this ruling that women's protection laws are not good for the country?

Or is it only a couple of extremely religious zealots. What is the public's opinion on this matter?

The rural poor that comprises the majority of Pakistani probably will agree with the islamic authorities.

The Qur'an became available for the average Muslim to read, that's why. This myth that there was this noble Islamic people needs to be quashed. If there were noble ones it was only because they were ignorant to their own cult. But the nobility of Islam needs to be eliminated. Islam is a disease, nothing more.

Once again we have evidence of the nature of the "real" Islam and more ammunition against those who argue that the only problem is a few screwball terrorists who aren't "real" Muslims.
