Overhyped fighters who really were only average

It's amazing how few people in this thead actually know what the term overrated is.

Probably someone like Tim Sylvia. I mean, he had a good run in the UFC for awhile, but his resume isn't great overall in its entirety. The Couture loss is a bad one, considering matchup wise it seemed very much in his favor with his reach and size advantage. Fedor destroyed him like nothing and Ray Mercer, a boxer fighting MMA, KO'd him in seconds. He never adjusted to his weaknesses, ie the overhand right. Considering he had a lengthy two-time run as UFC Champion, I would say he was kind of average.

Randy Couture was also a world champion on 5 separate occasions.

Lets also be realistic here. Do you really think he wasn't on PED's? He referred to himself as a late bloomer but that's BS. Men do not physically peak after 40. They just don't.

When he came out and beat chuck, that was impressive, nobody expected that. I wouldn't call him average but I definitely think he's over hyped BIG TIME. 5-10 of the current heavies would have taken the title from Tim at the time when Randy took it.

Yea I remember Dana and his fans trying to sell Tim as being world champion and ahead of guys like NOG CRO-cop and even Fedor.

Shogun's 22-9 overall record and 6-7 UFC record is pretty cringeworthy when you see his fans not only consider him one of the greatest fighter ever but also the greatest ever. He came along at the right time and had a great one year run in pride, similar to Sokoudjiu, and then people started to realize he is a tough brawler with little skill or athleticism. He did improve immensely after he came to the UFC but ultimately he is a fighter that will be forgotten about 30 years from now in this ever evolving sport of mma.

Good choice. Once you exclude 2005 his career is barely any better than Ninja's. Is it fair to exclude that year? Well as you said even Sokudjou strung together a pair of impressive KO's and look at how he's panned out

You could make a case for those five fighters being overhyped, but it is so subjective you could make a case for just about any fighter if not every fighter that ever fought. Not a single one of those guys was average. That is just moronic and wrong.

Age and injury have also taken the edge off some great fighters.

Using words like overhyped and average to describe former champions and top contenders says much more about the OP than the fighters he disparages.
