ONLY talking about boxing. How come it looks like crap? He's a decorated kickboxer I know that (I haven't watched any of it) but when I see him fight he throws these odd amateurish haymakers. No jab no technique no anything just kinda runs up to you and throw these wild odd windmill hooks that leave him more open than typical sherdoggers Saturday night? Was his striking better in K1? or did he always punch like this? Was it his kicks and knees that usually won the fights?

Because he's better at every other type of striking.

His best weapon even in k1 was his clinch and knees. But Dutch Muay Thai has more of an emphasis on boxing than eastern, so idk. I never noticed his hands weee that bad but never paid attention enough I guess

~DaViD~

his kickboxing was more about size and explosives then technical abilities. He is still better then most mma heavys in striking but yes he could be clear as could anyone.

It's weird. He's really good at picking shots that'll KO you, but not necessarily the one that'll leave you the best defensive position. Like recently in the Ngannou fight.

Agreed, his boxing is fucking terrible.

But you shouldn’t be using kickboxing as a barometer, the overall skill level in kickboxing is fucking awful compared to boxing and mma. It’s a scrub sport. K1 is just the elite of a very scrubby sport.

There are much better boxers in the UFC.

No he did it a lot in kickboxing(putting his head down and winging/windmilling hooks and playmakers like he did against ngannou in the pocket

Like the above poster said his kicks and knees/clinch were his bread and butter....they even changed the rules about the clinch basically because of him and his success using it

Ecoreem is a sniper. he just needs 1 shot to kill you

It very very strange. Because his hands where crisp and clean during his k1 run in 2008 - 2010

he's good at picking his shots, he drop miocic with his straight left and uses good angles and feints. his boxing looks sloppy but it's not. he was able to drop jds whose a very fast and crisp boxer.

his boxing is dogshit, only has hooks and Uberknees from double dose steroid league K1.

no way. the way he beat Badr Hari was masterful. he used lots of feints to expose Badr Hari's defenses and capitalized with shots that were defensively sound and perfectly timed. he tucked his chin, hid most of his head behind his massive shoulder and came in clean from a blind angle on Hari.

there was no hesitation in his movements like there is when he strikes in UFC. everything was fluid and everything had a reasoning behind it. it was one of the most efficient displays of striking in K-1 history.

don't forget everyone thought Badr was going to murder him.

He's inconsistent with his boxing. He has some very nice displays and technical knockouts over very good boxers, both in K-1 and MMA. But his overall arsenal isn't that varied with his hands and he's not a volume puncher at all.

Its because he protects his chin and stays a LOT lower than he used too. He cant take shots anymore but he still has 1ko power with short hooks.

Staying so low and focusing on hooks and knees lets him stay in his comfort range and protect his chin. Old school reem stood taller and even though he had size advantages came in close and did unbelievable amounts of damage. He NEVER had a great chin, but now he nothing. its just tongue and brain

It doesn't help that his technique can be so easily short-circuited by his discomfort when he feels he's not on top of the situation.

nah.

He guard was to high leaving his body exposed, his striking was not bad to call it one of the best in K-1 history is a flagrant foul. Guys like Aerts, hoost,Petrosian and Buakaw are what your describing not a HW taking on blow up LHW. Sponge is not a true heavyweight, neither is gokan and beating up an old Aerts is still an accomplishment but to say he showed anything fantastic would be a miss telling.

maybe i down played his skill to much He was good in K-1 but its his size and strength then won him more fights then his skills (altho yes he had some skills as well, not a bob sapp). Beating takeria (SP?) was about locking on on a clinch and landing a devastating knee. UBEREEM had really good clinch with some devastating knees, but lacked in most other areas compared to the greats of K-1.

I guess it is just his style, many K1 fighters don't have good boxing full stop. Only some guys like Ghita, Saki, Vakhitov etc. Boxing is completely different from punching in kickboxing.

Greg Jackson.

Hey have no JAB, almost one of the longest arms in the UFC but no decent JAB to keep his opponents at bay and when they finally are in range he can deliver his straight right. But i never knew why his boxing is so poor he had trained with the best trainers holland had to offer.

you're not understanding what i'm saying. i'm not saying he's one of the greatest K-1 technical fighters ever, but that single fight, he was more efficient than most any other HW fighter in a single fight.

his guard wasn't too high, he wanted Hari to go to his body so he could counter with his knees and clinch him.

he owned Badr Hari and Hari was in his prime and at the top of the k-1 at that time and he ended up KOing Schilt shortly after that loss.

his victory was flawless and he executed Hari in a way that put everyone on notice, it wasn't a lucky punch, or Hari got caught off guard by early aggression. Overeem simply was a better striker and outplayed him at his own game.
