hopefully these guys both stashed some cheddar for the long and unavoidable battle with CTE down the road.

Reem's still sharper than most fighters which I find crazy

wow

i dont know if that's impressive or scary

Idk if things will change down the line but he seems well in possession of his faculties. And not every KO is the same either... I feel like he's probably at an advantage compared to a, say, football player of 5+ years...

Except its not "unavoidable". Not everyone who gets punched or ko'd even multiple times is going to get CTE. In fact theres far more fighters who dont get it than those who do.

maybe its avoidable at midgetweight, but not at lunchboxweight.

I wonder if it isn't "better" for the brain to shut off when he hit like with glassjaw fighters, rather than with iron chinned fighters who stay in there and can take hundreds of punches. Overeem doesn't get hit hard a lot, but when he does he tends to be finished soon after. I would imagine the total number of "significant strikes" he's taken is way less than guys like Hunt, Wand, Shogun, Hendo, Liddell, etc.

I don't see how cheese is going to help them in that situation.

I think I read somewhere that Struve, Overeem, Arlovski , and Bigfoot had 30 ko/tko losses between the four of them. Crazy to think about and very scary long term, especially for a guy like Bigfoot having been finished in so many of his recent fights

Says... ?????
Where did you read that? Medical/neuroscience journals? Are you a neuroscientist ?
There's a pretty clear correlation between blows to the head (concussive or subconcussive) and CTE. Jamie Varner was ko'd one time and at 31 he has to see a cognitive therapist regularly to keep himself in order. Definitely not something to downplay.

Ok Jamie Varner and who else? You can probably count on one hand those who have shown signs of CTE out of the thousands of fighters over mmas 23 year history.

He got concussed alot in training

TJ grant, Jamie Varner, Gary Goodrich, krzysztof soszynski, Chris Holdsworth have all showed serious side effects after concussions. That hand filled up pretty fast and these were only guys off the top of my head. Diagnosing CTE is unreliable right now and as of now it can only be confirmed post-mortem in autopsy.

23 years is a relatively short period of time and not every athlete is as open with their private life and obstacles. Its not even debatable, multiple concussions is not good for the brain and the concern is 100% valid. Especially for a man like Overeem who has suffered 12 knockout defeats as a professional MMA fighter and kickboxer. Football players, boxers, even professional wrestlers are all very much at risk. And some of the symptoms- particularly violent and erratic behavior, are obviously hard to distinguish from the behavior which professional athletes may have a proclivity to partake in due to any number of reasons.

http://www.hindawi.com/journals/rerp/2012/816069/ is a pretty interesting article on the subject. Skim to #3: Risk factors, #4: Clinical presentations, and especially even just the first paragraph of #5: pathophysiology. Being in denial of the seriousness of brain trauma helps no one. I understand we all enjoy the sport but the consequences of repetitive blows to the head cannot simply be ignored for convenience.

Shamrock is still going strong. They'll be ok

Doesn't even include Reem'a kickboxing fights, plus all of the hard sparring at Golden Glory and Blackzilians. Reem has been doing this since he was a teen, and also spent plenty of time cutting a lot of weight to get to 205 iirc. It is pretty amazing he's as sharp as he is right now.

Better to be "glass jawed" for sure. I'm surprised Micky Ward isn't completely brain dead
