Prior to the fight announcement, there was lots of talk (on sherdog paticularly) that UFC 200 was going to be booked with the McGregor/Diaz because its what the "casual fans" wanted, and that would bring in the most money. But I honestly believe that the casual fans dont really have enough invested into the UFC to actually care or deeply consider who they wanted to see Conor McGregor face next. He is still the FW champion, his mouth still works, I think he could have still done record numbers for UFC 200 by defending his title. From what I can gather casuals hardly care about McGregors opponent they just care about McGregor, I think we are greatly overestimating their influence if we point to them as having a legitimate voice as to what is good for business. McGregor sold 196 because he was coming off the most impressive victory in UFC history, not because it he was fighting Nate Diaz at WW.

So my question to you all is, do you feel casual fans really wanted to see this fight in particular or did they just want to see McGregor. I think it will be hard for McGregor to really sell himself going into the fight considering the way he lost to Diaz the first time. I also would like to add, that for those who did say this was all about "money" and casual fan interest, Im pretty sure Dana said they tried to get him to fight someone else but Conor "was obsessed" over this fight so they just gave him what he wanted. I dont know how true this is considering Dana's lack of credibility but, nonetheless I am interested in your opinions. So fire away....

I highly doubt they care.

Probably because after Conor and Ronda, casuals couldn't name another MMA fighter.

We all care who he fights. But the hardcore fans and the casual set different values for each matchup. The hardcore fans want to see a fight for the quality of the fighters and how their styles matchup, while the casuals want to see cool and marketable fighters go at it.

1.5 Million PPV buys says they care.

Not even a fan of the guy, but he DEFINITELY draws in new, casual eyeballs.

I said who he fights, not him alone. He definitely draws, I just feel like he couldve pulled those numbers fighting anyone.

My casual friends don't seem to care, they just wanna see McGoat fight and win. He could crush cans and they would be happy.

according to dana white you can't get around paige van zant , she is the next best thing according to him. sad truth is that even casuals dont give a shit lol

Of course not. They just want to see that particular fighter throw down with whoever is put in front of them

No, they just swallow up the narrative about how he has changed the game and he is the first superstar that MMA ever had.

Nate/Conor probably could have sold 2 million if they had booked it right away instead of the RDA fight. They sold 1.5mil and only had 1 press conference. Can you imagine the kind of hype they could have gotten generated with a couple months of trash talk?

Some fans care who he fights, but at this point we know that he is going to sell a lot no matter who it is

Casuals are the ones who don't know about the events and flip through the channel as say, "Look people are UFCing" and watch it. Conor is really popular right now so people who don't appreciate high profile and meaningful fights will prefer watching him for his popularity then because it is an important fight. After Conor lost facebook and news outlets blew up with interview and stories about the fight. Something I have never seen with other fights. It was up there with the Ronda loss.

McGregor's fanbase is entirely made of casuals.

Casuals care about what the media tells them to care about.

I think there is definitely some truth to that. Granted, there have to be levels of 'casualness'. Some have to know other fighters, etc. Many will know it's the guy he just lost to and may want to see him redeem himself.

You do not have to be a 'casual' fan to care about Conor making the sport more popular especially in a unpopular division. and he is taking the sport to the new levels financially.

They want to see McGregor.

As to Diaz, McGregor supposedly begged Dana to run it back. And he (they) did.

Yes. My group of friends never watch mma or the UFC but they all went to the bar just to watch McGregor vs Diaz. They even sought out those press conferences on their own volition, without me or anyone else who's into mma showing it to them.
