O'malley faceplants Aljo in round one

O'Malley has poor TDD, below average grappling for a top ranked BW and has brittle legs, he's the perfect fighter for Aljo to look amazing against.

I expect Aljo is going to beat his legs up and then dominate him on the ground, might get a TKO or submission too since O'Malley's grappling is a big step down from most of Aljo's opponents. O'Malley's brittle legs and poor GnP defense(watch the Vera and Yan fights to see O'Malley's poor GnP defense) makes a TKO for Aljo a lot more likely than normal.

With Aljo likely to employ an "all the way in or all the way out" approach (i.e. will be feinting/kicking at range and looking to shoot/clinch reactively, probably won't be boxing or throwing hands except as a set-up), it does force Sean to probably try a "gambit" approach to give him the best chance at winning.

Because if he plays a patient game trying to time the perfect step-in counter on a leg-kick he'll likely be too low volume and just get his legs chewed up until his movement/TDD are compromised. I think the lesson learned from the Moraes fight is that Aljo is most susceptible to being hurt and blitzed very early in a fight, before he gets comfortable with his opponents techniques/speed/timing.

In some ways Yan was kind of a good opponent for him, because he starts so slow it lets Aljo get a feel for the fight and be able to make adjustments and reads, as he is a very intelligent fighter. But if you just get in his face and start throwing hands early he'll typically just try to panic-shoot or clinch and control you, so if Sean can get in his face immediately and just start feinting he might be able to bait the reaction he needs to land a huge step-knee/head-kick/uppercut.

I mean, I wouldn't bet on it, but I wouldn't be shocked either - it's just such a narrow-approach to victory you need to execute that strategy flawlessly or else the holes get exposed as the fight goes on. McGregor was able to pull this trick off repeatedly at FW and it looks like Suga is trying to do the same at BW i.e. be the tallest/longest striker that has great timing and speed, use early pressure to bait opponents to blitz and then counter them. Just like McGregor I think he lacks the durability and cardio to implement this style effectively over a 5-round fight, but he can definitely do it for 1.5 rounds and be very dangerous for that period.

Why wouldn't Aljo just come out less aggressive since it is a 5 round fight... & he is a champ & has a corner full of coaches

Have you been following the UFC lately? He'll fight two favourable matchups in the lower end of the top 10 and get his shot. Hell he could just sit out for 2 years after a loss and get a free title shot.
Yes have you?

Simon is ranked #12, Umar is ranked #11, Yanez is ranked #13. Not exactly easy matchups.

My point was that Sean is in a division where favorable ranked matchups aren't that many.

I wonder how he'll have his hair for a fight of such magnitude. Most likely it will be something we have not yet seen.

Its just too much pressure for Aljo. O'malley lures Aljo into exchange and faceplants him in round one. Size and speed difference is inevitable. Seans grappling is also very underrated. O'malley takes title and i think he holds that title long time. Hes such a massive guy for that division that i could easily see him moving up to 145 and being dog top there aswell.

Maybe. If somehow they stand and bang it’s definitely possible. O’Malley is a really good striker. Look what Aljo did to Sandhagen though. I can’t get that out of my head when I think about this matchup.

Found this neat little move-for-move Sean-Conor compilation.

This, who has Omalley faceplanted in the UFC? Moutinho is a FLW and survived until the ref realized he had money on it by KO and stopped the fight for some weird reason, Almeida was down and then he got the finishing punch, Sterling wouldnt risk it by trading with him imo.

I can’t fucking wait for O’Malley to take that belt just so I can see all of y’all old heads on here seethe with rage and try to cope with the fact a dude that looks like a rainbow haired poodle is the baddest man on the planet (…in that particular weight division).

Aljo might get dropped but his on-his-knees defense is second to none, so O’Malley won’t be able to finish.

It’s possible but from what we have seen from o Malley on the ground it’s not good.

And before you guys say BuT SeAn has done grappling before yes he has he submitted an old Gomi. He also did a rubber guard for a split second against Yan
