Could be one of the best examples of ''styles make fights''.

Because its a fact that Poirier, no.1 ranked > Lee, no.8 ranked at the time , however their fights were almost equally competitive vs. Oliveira in the first two rounds, and both Poirier and Lee got finished in the third.

-Poirier clearly won the first round 10-9 vs. Oliveira, Poirier dropped him.

Then lost the second round 10-8 by getting dominated on the ground by Oliveira. Which is why he had no energy left due to the damage in third round, Poirier gassed out. Just like Lee gassed out in the third, another similarity.

-I think Lee won the first round (however lost the first round on the scorecards according to judges),
and second round was clearly Oliveira's, however it was also competitive, not a round that Oliveira dominated Lee, not even close.

As well as Dariush also says Kevin Lee won 1 round vs. Oliveira, and he also disagrees with the judges.

This is what Dariush says:

I think stylistically, yes [we are the toughest matchups for Oliveira]. Because if you look at the Kevin Lee fight, Kevin Lee was not doing that well with Charles but he did his best work against him on the ground, when he stayed on top. I think he may have won one round by just being on top, by holding Charles down for a round. No disrespect to Kevin, but Kevin doesn’t have the jiu-jitsu, the submission grappling down as much as myself or Islam. I think stylistically, we’re a nightmare matchup for Charles. I think I’m a nightmare matchup for both of them.”

If you compare who did better against Oliveira, Lee definitely has a case here.

I think everyone remembers Oliveira vs. Poirier, so I am not going to get into too much details for that fight.

I just rewatched Oliveira vs. Lee, and refreshed my memory, so here comes the details.

So here we go:

Oliveira vs. Lee, first round:

- 4:54 two quick body shots from Oliveira

- 4:34 another kick to body from Oliveira

- 4:32 jab from Lee

- 4:13 leg kick from Oliveira, jab to body by Lee

- 4:00 big right hand from Lee

- 3:57 leg kick from Oliveira

- 3:54 body shot by Lee

- 3:50 jab by Lee

- 3:47 jab by Lee

- 3:46 takedown attempt by Oliveira

- 3:43 Lee stuffed the takedown and falls over Oliveira

- 3:40, 3:16 Lee is on top, Oliveira hits Lee from bottom

- 3:12 Lee takes the top position again

- 2:37 Lee almost gets in the mount

- 2:22 2 ground strikes by Lee from the top

- 2:03 Oliveira punches him from the bottom

- 1:25 Lee gets into the full guard of Oliveira

- 1:08 scrambles, Oliveira gets on the top, boby shot from Oliveira

- 0:50 Lee gets on top of Oliveira, Oliveira hits from the bottom

- 0:20 Lee is on the top until this moment and 3 heavy ground strikes from Lee

- 0:11 Lee gets in the full guard of Oliveira once again

- 0:06 2 ground strikes from Lee from the top

I personally count 12 significant strikes from Lee, 8 significant strikes from Oliveira in the first round,

Lee also controlled Oliveira nearly for 3 minutes,

Lee most of the time had the top control vs. Oliveira in this round.

According to the UFC stats, Lee outstrike Oliveira 15 to 13 significant strikes in the first round, and Lee also had 3:30 control time.

Reminder that the stats don't mean everything, so we should also look at the effectiveness,

In this round I think the biggest shot was from Lee in the 4:00 minute (see the first gif above), other strikes less and more are equal, + Lee has nearly 3 minutes control time on the ground against Oliveira.

I think this is Lee's round. However judges scored the 1st round to Oliveira on the scorecards.

Perhaps because the fight was on Brazil, they want to favor Oliveira but nevermind.

I would like to hear how you scored the first round.

Second round, Oliveira vs. Lee:

- 4:46 right hand from Lee

- 4:41 kick to body from Oliveira

- 4:32 left hook from Lee, then a big right hand from Lee

- 4:28 jab from Lee

- 4:26 leg kick from Oliveira

- 4:19 body shot from Lee

- 4:17 right hand from Lee

- 4:15 right hand from Oliveira

- 4:11 left hook from Oliveira

- 4:06 right hand from Oliveira

- 3:56 uppercut from Oliveira

- 3:49 body shot, uppercut, right hand combo from Oliveira

- 3:38 leg kick from Oliveira

- 3:24 uppercut and body shot from Oliveira

- 3:18 left hook from Lee, body shot from Oliveira

- 3:10 right hand from both of them

- 3:04 Lee shoots a takedown and successfully takes Oliveira down

giphy.gif

- 3:01 Lee is in the full mount of Oliveira

- 2:55 armbar attempt from Oliveira, Lee defends it

- 2:47 triangle attempt from Oliveira, Lee gets out of it

- 2:32 scrambles, Oliveira tries to guillotine on standing, Lee defends it, and takes Oliveira down again

giphy.gif

- 2:20 Lee is on top, is in the half guard of Oliveira

- 2:12 2 light ground strikes from Lee

- 1:55 light ground strikes from both of them

- 1:46 light ground strikes from Lee, he is on the top of Oliveira

- 1:33 another light ground strike from Lee

- 1:12 Lee still controls Oliveira, ground strikes from Lee,

- 0:50 ground strikes from Lee

- 0:15 elbows from Lee, he is on top of Oliveira

Now, despite Lee's ground control and ground strikes, and 2 successful takedowns, I think Oliveira did enough damage on standing to win this round.

As well as the stats also says Oliveira outstrike 28 to 16 in significant strikes, although Lee outstrike Oliveira 36 to 33 overall,

Still significant strikes obviously more important, I understand why the judges gave this round to Oliveira,

However its still not a round where Oliveira dominated, not even close. Lee also had his moments, and controlled Oliveira on the ground even in the second round.

Lee took down Oliveira 2 times, defended his submission attempts, even outstrike him via ground strikes in this round, its a competitive round from Lee.

Not even close where Poirier got dominated by Oliveira in the second round. So this round is the difference between Lee and Poirier, while Poirier got dominated in the second round, Lee gave Oliveira a competitive round and controlled Oliveira on the ground.

If you score the first round to Lee, then its obvious that Lee did better than Poirier against Oliveira.

So, how did you score the first round of Lee vs. Oliveira?

A fresh Lee was one of the best offensive wrestlers in the LW division. DP was a Champion level LW striker. Charles finished both of them. How a round was scored in one of those fights is mostly irrelevant since Judges are only required in about 10% of Oliveira's fights.

lol @ round 2 being a 10-8. He mostly just held position. Some decent GNP but certainly not 10-8 GNP or damage. If you score round 2 10-8 for Charles you'd have to score round 1 10-7 for Dustin.

And this is coming from a guy that favors grappling too.

What's impressive is RD. 1 Poirier did more damage, and it seems Oliveira has improved since the Lee fight.
Physically Oliveira looks bigger since the Lee fight.

Damage perspective Poirier was better rd. 1
Control perspective, Lee did it better.

Rd. 2, 100% Lee did better but I don't think he won the round.

Styles make fights. Lee is an awesome grappler, so I’m not surprised at how well he did.

A huge amount of work for a topic nobody cares about, wow

Lee vs Oliveira round 1... What year is it?
