Oliveira tears Topuria a new one

When was the last time a fighter looked great going up in a division and won against a top level opponent?

Volk and Adesanya failed. Was it Max, but is Justin a top tier opponent? Jones maybe?

Silva and Ilia looked good at LW but they fought lower level opponents.
Only one who’s power translated to a higher weight class was Pereira, but he has a LHW frame too.

Did you just say Holloway schooled Topuria for three rounds with a straight face? That fight had a constant feeling of inevitability about it. It was clear a matter of when not if.

I felt that way in the volk fight too, then have heard people say volk was winning until he got caught.

I genuinely feel like some people watch this sport and don't grasp how it really works.

Both of those fights felt like "shit, which of these exchanges is going to be the one where Ilia is in the right place to demolish the opening he is setting up"
Meanwhile it felt to me like Max and Volk where both just perplexed and overwhelmed and hoping they were GUESSING the right blocking or dodging to survive another exchange..

And when Ilia did connect... no surprise here.
Computer overloaded. Combination came in hard and heavy and you avoided the first one but the hook got ya clean as fuck.

That's the issue for Charles. I love him but he drops his right hand in exchanges. He does it on kicks and punches and Ilia has one of if not the best left hook in the gane.

Charles needs to fight smart. Which I would not bet on.
If Charles is extremely regimented on throwing primarily straight shots up the middle. Teap kick, 1-2, front kick, knee up the middle BEHIND a setup... that could win him the fight.

If he plays hooks and angles I think Ilia wins and likely early.
And Charles likes to throw hooks.

Charles needs takedowns. He hould have a HUGE size advantage. If Bryce Mitchel could put Ilia on his back, Charles at least has hope. Mount or back mount i think Charles finishes from. People are very high on Ilias grappling though.

I do believe either man can win, and could do so DOMINANTLY but I feel like Charles is the one who has to adjust the most from his normal tendencies to have that outcome occur which makes it tough to pick him.

As a Pereira fan, i gotta say anyone that thought that big ass mofo was a MW was crazy. I still have doubts if he has only a LHW frame.

He was struggling with Jai Hervert for two rounds and Oliveira is much bigger. Dehydraded Holloway schooled Topuria for 3 rounds untill he got KO’d. Hydraded Oliveira is different caliber than zombie holloway at 145. Mark my words Oliveira finishes Topuria and sends him back to 145
lmfao @ dehydrated holloway and schooled and 3 rounds when the fight was 8 mins

The Jai Herbert fight was over three years ago when Ilia was 25
And Herbert is 3-5-1 in the UFC, its not like "green" Topuria was having issues with an all time great, if your point is that he got better, thats very valid and true, but at the same time, he wasnt fighting quality opposition.

I believe he can win this fight, but its more of a 50-50 fight all things considered and if Topuria loses he will be in a bit of a predicament here, probably goes back to FW instead of fighting through LW contenders that are all bigger than him just to get another shot at the title.

If you wanna go by their bad moments I can easily bring up Olive getting punched in the head repeatedly and getting rocked by 40 year old, steroid gut Chandler.

I favor Ilia but Olive might be able to have a chance if he doesn't go for those stupid, defenseless flying knees with his hands down and applies a grappling heavy game and creates some scrambles and maybe latches onto a sub in midst of all the chaos.

Ilia is short and this has resulted in him getting caught with head kicks in the past and Olive has some good kicks so that could also be on the table.

The best thing Olive can do is make it to round 3. I think his size advantage could be valuable if it goes that far.
This is great analysis

Ultimately ilia has infinitely higher fight iq than olive tho. I think he’s several steps ahead of him mentally.

That’s what it will come down to. Not technique, but the mind.

3 years but ilia has only fought 4 times after that. His weakness against taller fighters still remains
That's three years of training as he moves fully into his athletic prime. Oliveira is also an inch shorter than Max.

Im surprised the betting line is so one sided, Topuria has set himself up for greatness with a win or a big fall if he loses. Good on him to fight and promote well to get this chance

Tonight is the updated answer.

Volk also looked great in the first Islam fight despite losing. Penn against Hughes. Also the likes of Couture, DC and Pereira. Though I think it's different at the higher weight classes.

Also just the many, many guys that have moved up in weight class and had better careers afterwards. Oliveira himself. Whittaker. Tons of examples.
