Xbox Official Xbox thread

Thanks Nintendo. GTA6 will be $100 no doubt.

Reason given, 'market conditions and rising cost in game development'. Least they were cryptically truthful.
Yeah, had to stifle a smirk there. They don't want to provoke backlash.

I suspect this is just like with the subscription plan price hikes. Microsoft is only going first. The rest will follow.

Seems like Microsoft also throwing in the towel on this gen and accepting that they need to squeeze existing customers for more money because that outweighs revenue from growing their slice of TAM with more console and by extension game sales.

Hard to decipher the plan here with Microsoft's poor planning and support of its entire gaming portfolio (cough cough handheld).

id is a Bethesda studio
Bethesda is owned by Microsoft
Not too long ago, id released an exclusive trailer on the Playstation channel to promote the next Doom

That should tell you all you need to know about where things are headed.

The plan is very clear. They will release their software and gamepass everywhere they possibly can. The hardware is there for anyone who still wants it but don't expect a price break.

That's a plan in the same way Elon wants to go to Mars. Whether or not Microsoft has the software and devs to properly execute on it is a very different story.

Microsoft's half in, half out support for Copilot+, Windows on Arm, and handhelds are clear evidence of that.

It's the same plan every other 3rd party publisher has. Put your games in as many places as possible. The only difference here is that Xbox has the hardware that they have to support on top of it. Which I think they have a plan for that as well but I'm not sure what it is yet. OEM hardware seems to be the play but we will see.

Microsoft has been quite transparent on this strategy since 2017(?).
I don't think they've been transparent about it at all. Even when they did the 4 games there were tons of people who seriously believed that would be it and that they would only do older games. I knew right away they were doing everything at that point and timed exclusives were the best they would do but that doesn't even look like it's happening.

It's not, different publishers have different release plans because the margin structure is so different. Ie Game Pass margins suck compared to full game purchases the more a gamer plays, the money for GamePass is from people who effectively don't use it as much as they should.

They have a plan for it, but it could use a lot of refinement and followthrough. Both things Microsoft sucks at.

Yeah, that's the goal, but Microsoft has a lot of work to do. The Best Buy return rates on something like the Legion Go are insane because Microsoft shit the bed with OS. Same reason that the Microsoft folks at CES were shocked when Lenovo came in at a lower price with Steam OS and were completely blindsided.

A lot of the Ally's success is due to Asus' brand ID, and Microsoft hasn't figured out what to do after they exhaust that avenue. Not saying they can't, just it's a bumpy road these days.

Yes the OEM stuff could all fall apart I agree with that. MS has horrible follow through and when they said they were going to remake windows and do an Xbox UI for windows I rolled my eyes. These guys can barely get their PC store functioning. Now they are going to completely revamp the windows UI to work like a console? I have my doubts. The only thing that gives me hope for them is I've seen programs like Playnite (1 person) come very close to doing what Xbox wants. So maybe they can do it.

It's not a resources issue, it's a management and execution issue. I've yet to meet a product manager who has nice things to say about working with Microsoft lol.

Edit: I should note the primary obstacles to Lunar Lake handhelds at this point is Microsoft stubbornness about Copilot+ and the added costs that brings.

Phil Spencer has.

Phil Spencer has been the biggest spreader of BS during this whole process.

There's Phil telling everyone it's only 4 games and not to expect anymore games coming from them. He already knew he was lying at this point and that more games were already in development. If they've been transparent about putting their games everywhere since 2017 then why is he trying to convince people that there are only doing 4 games right now for "testing" and not to expect more?

I'd imagine it's to avoid a huge drop in people buying games and the resulting loss in revenue.
