Returning to the Cymru/Caucasus connection:
Did you know?
(apparently it was a plot point in the 2000s King Arthur movie with Kiera Knightly; I haven't seen that film, but perhaps it's a well known idea already)
A couple of historians have theorised that the famous King Arthur legends have their origins with Sarmatian soldiers (from eastern europe/north caucasus) stationed in Britannia in the Roman era.
Supposedly legends such as the holy grail, sword in the stone, lady of the lake, the adventures of a group of chivalrious knights (who are amusingly monty-python soundingly called the '
Narts'), have close parallels in North Caucasian legends.
it is also claimed the Sarmatian garrison marched under a red dragon banner (the red dragon eventually reappearing as the flag of Wales).
Sarmatians are also thought to be the
inspiration for the Greek 'Amazon' myth, and a high proportion of their ancient graves contain women with arms and battle dress.
The modern population that is perhaps most closely descended from the Sarmatians is (drum roll....) the Ossetians.
So, until we get some femme GB grappling Amazon taking over MMA to cheer for, I guess the best we can do is adopt 'Princess' Diana Avsaragova as our representitive.
War Diana 'True Brit' Avsaragova!
