Official Women's Division Discussion #27

After rewatching a couple times, I still have no idea who won the Pannie vs. Alexis fight, could be anything from 29-28 Pannie to 30-27 Davis. Round 2 was a clear win for Davis, round 1 was too close to call, and 3 was also darn close but I think Alexis might've squeaked it out. Maybe. Ask me who won the fight tomorrow and I'll probably change my mind again.

Judges got it right for JoJo vs. Murphy though. JoJo threw a bunch of strikes at the air in round 1 and the ones that landed barely touched, whereas Murphy landed fewer strikes but connected solidly. The scoring criteria prioritizes strikes that have an immediate visible effect over ones that don't, so Murphy takes that round along with round 2 where she got the takedown and a bunch of ground control time. JoJo finally cut it out with the tippy-tap shit in round 3 and put some mustard on her shots, she won the round cleanly but it was too late since she was already down 2 rounds. And then Murphy botches her post-fight interview and just says she'll do whatever instead of calling out Valentina. Hello? You had one job. They'll probably match her up with Chookagian next and kill any hopes of a title shot.

Serrano has been a star for years in female boxing.
A prospect is someone like Sandy Ryan or Ramla Ali.
Serrano has been a champ for a number of years, but she's never been a star.
Nah, Shannon said in an interview that all the fights counted because a title was on the line.
Shannon's a good promoter, always has a good answer. Fighter grumblings tell a different story.
I think most of the atomweights are in One FC
atomweights are spread out all over. ONE's atomweights fight at 115, and a number of them are closer to being true strawweights. Japan has a number of them, Korea has some, they're all over. travel restrictions right now make matchmaking dificult, some promotions having exclusive contracts make it moreso.

I'm not saying the women at IKON are a lost cause but if Keith Veltre (owner) can get some
decent women signed both for the US & Mexican cards he could start making a impact since
it seems like IKON could be a decent promotion if a few good signings are picked up.

Serrano says she has another MMA fight coming up.

Another video from her last fight.

Hopefully against a live body this time. Following her mma career, as she takes more fights, her opponents have less experience.

no disrespect to all the females competing recently, but hasn't it felt like a slow last couple of months in the women's mma sphere? I feel like so many of the big names\prospects haven't fought since March or April. I wish we knew what was next for Weili and or Rose. Also it would be great to know what's happening with Mackenzie Dern and Tatiana Suarez. What was the last big wmma fight you were excited about?

Rose vs. Weili. Yeah, hoping some bigger fights are announced soon.

Agreed, which is very odd, because Invicta just put on two back to back shows (one being a tournament), the women have been active in Bellator (Cyborg defended her belt not too long ago, Velasquez has her first title defense coming up), UFC, and the PFL's tournament. It has however, felt like the last high profile or truly relevant event was the card with Weili vs Rose, and Valentina vs Jessica.Strange.

Couple of things from Macedo's instagram story Q&A:

"I suffered a few concussions, and I have been having really bad symptoms for the past, I think more than 18 months. So… Once I figure that out, I’ll start training again."

Rats :( She does mention later that she has been feeling better, especially the last two weeks and the next doc's appointment is in two weeks... but still a bummer.

Also, which one of you buggers was this?

No, the opposite

I'm guessing this post is mostly because there aren't many big fights booked right now, but there have been plenty over the last couple of months, for me personally, and this is only for UFC fights (there are exciting-on-paper 'big' bouts elsewhere, particularly in ONE right now):
in May:
Carla Esparza vs Yan Xiaonan
Norma Dumont vs Felicia Spencer! (for the 'best bbw apart from the actually good ones of Nunes and Cyborg' belt - isn't that a big deal? ;) ) (also did I just admit Cyborg is good? shit :( )
Marina Rodriguez vs Michelle Waterson (UFC headline event!)

in April
Rose Namajunas vs Weili Zhang
Valentina Shevchenko vs Jessica Android
Mackenzie Dern vs Nina Stroganoff, I mean Nunes

March:
Amanda Nunes vs Megan Anderson

Feb:
Alexa Grasso vs Maycee Barber (UFC co-main)

Apart from personal interest, I think they all qualify as big names/big deals in the wider WMMA world.
if anything, it's been a bit of a hot spot if you ask me.... says something that Rose/Weili was 1.5 months ago and we're proposing it's been 'slow lately' ;)

LUX Fight League (available via UFC Fight Pass) has set the next two quarterfinal bouts of it's fyweight tournament for LUX 14 next weekend, June 25. Tournament's winner will be crowned the inaugural LUX flyweight champion.

Let's hope it happens:

If recent pics I've seen of the ladies at Syndicate are anything to go by, Nicco has a monumental task ahead of her to get down to bantamweight.
