Official Women's Division Discussion #27

They say insanity is repeating the same thing over and expecting a different result, so maybe Lobo should change their name to Loco Gym. I expect we've heard that joke before, disappointing but not unexpected cornering.

OK, so folk are going to enjoy a joke at Julianna's expense but she's one of the few who can compete at the top of 135 ...... could she make 125 though?

DeRandamie Holm rematch next, I usually dislike final contender matchups but these two have already had title fights, so it's not as if you're damaging a young prospect. I'd guess Holly, at least, is still a draw for the wider public, maybe not for those who moan about her many chances .... but who cares about them.

I've never been a fan of Frey, so my bad for not having faith in Loma, a well received performance that deserves a more appropriate division.

I think Pena can make 125 but it would be difficult. I have heard nothing about cutting becoming harder post-pregnancy. She did not seem particularly large compared to Montaño who could still be fighting at 125 if she did not blow up in between fights.

The other day I almost made a post complaining about ONE's atomweight class being so wide open that 46kg fighters are stuck in a division with a 53kg monster like Anissa Meksen. Then I just realized Loma Lookboonmee's next fight is probably against like Poliana Bothelho or Amanda Lemos and I'm sad for the tiny fighters everywhere.

Poliana Bothelho is now fighting at 125 lbs with her next opponent being Gillian Robertson.

White shirt!

Good thing Frey kept her white shirt on during the walkout (Loma walked out in a black shirt), thus erasing Loma's part of the curse.
Pena and Aldana also did their walkouts while wearing their white tops, this curse is realer than I ever imagined.

Thoughts. Loma has tricky timing on her kicks which gave Frey a lot of trouble. Sometimes she kicks straight from her stance, sometimes she steps & kicks, and other times she steps, pauses, and then kicks. She also mixes up her round kicks and teeps which makes life fun for her opponents. Frey got stuck on the outside eating kicks or getting clinch abused up close.

GDR looked good in the 1st round, then she stopped jabbing like she meant it and didn't do as well. Pena was able to close distance on her easier and even land some sloppy punch combos of her own. Legitimately hurt myself laughing at the finish, Pena worked so hard for the takedown only to get choked out cold by a guillotine.

Don't even know what to say about the Aldana Holm fight. I don't think Holly fought any better than usual, it's more like Aldana walked herself into more punches than everyone since Ronda. Aldana kept circling & trying to enter range the exact same way and Holly kept putting her side kick or left punch straight down the middle. I think the worst part was that every time Holly threw, Aldana would run all the way out of range and then have to try and chase her back down again, rinse & repeat for 5 rounds. This fight made my head hurt.

Loved all the women's fights last night. None were overly competitive although pena had a moment in the 2nd where she was in charge, the winners really showcase their stuff to big wins.

And to echo everyone else Holm vs gdr 2 is the fight to make.

Other matches I wouldn't mind seeing next Pena vs vieira, Aldana vs Chiasson, Loma vs anyone really, and Frey vs Cifers.

Germaine doesn't have a black belt in any grappling discipline though. That is what negates the "at least she's a black belt in BJJ" excuses. Because Peña losing to Shevchenko isn't that bad, she's got a black belt in Judo after all, right? Peña getting put to sleep by someone with no grappling credentials isn't excusable. She effed up.

Dear Lord, I knew it and I called it. Irene Aldana had nothing for Holly Holm, nowhere near her level. Haters can commit massive suicide, the truth is Holly and Germaine are not going anywhere because they're still far ahead of these up and comers. The same thing would've happened to Aspen Ladd had she fought Holm, she would've lost in a one sided fight. In a sense, they're the Chookagian of bantamweight, can't beat the champion but clearly better than the rest of the division.

GDR vs Holm II at 135 in January/February. Winner fights Nunes in June/July.

Kudos for calling both Holm & GDR. They proved their rankings are well-deserved.

Prior to last night Aldana was improving dramatically getting some great finishes. She wanted to test her limits and emphatically found them against Holm. She didn't get kod despite Holly's violent push in round 5. I credit Aldana for going the distance & felt bad watching her take so much punishment.

Pena is tough as nails. Yeah she exposed her neck during the level change going for the double. GDR clamped like a vice & didn't let go. Juliana got choked out. Then by the announcements she was smiling & congratulating GDR. She even posted to GDR something like 'live by the sword die by the sword, congrats to you for a great performance.'

I love mma for all the surprises!

Xiong Jingnan vs Tiffany Teo 2
Should be a good one. Teo has looked much improved, but Xiong's power is what got her last time.
What worries me with Xiong is she switched camps to Evolve in Singapore, and if what I hear is true, there's no real structure there. No real head coach or coaches.

Also, ONE has announced an "atomweight" grand prix for 2021, with details TBA.

Good job Leto.
Thanks. My Bellator reviews have been getting more eyes on them lately than any UFC review I've done. I'm starting to wonder if the UFC fight review market is gettng oversaturated. This video is sitting at over 5k views in a little 5 days, so there is definitely a market for non-UFC fight reviews. Unfortunately, it's a game of pick 'em.

Monika's compliment makes the bad reviews I've gotten on this one disappear.

Not sure when it happened, but Carla Esparza has been moved up to number six in the UFC rankings, pushing Gadelha down to 7.

Theory: UFC going all in on the Ribas hype train. If Ribas beats Esparza, they’ll slot her in directly at number 6, a not entirely unreasonable spot for a title shot, at most a single win away.
