Official Women's Division Discussion #25

Quick heads up I will be in Oklahoma City next week for the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association's National Tournament doing some coverage. Many of these gals will be most likely transitioning to MMA soon.

May also try to get an interview with Emily Ducote.

So Sherdog's Twitter feed says Ducote vs. Williams is official.

Williams may have destroyed Hardy, but I feel that Ducote may be too much, too soon for her.

I will admit to not being as knowledgeable about Ducote as I am some other girls but doing some record research I am not seeing anything that pops out to me that she is really good. Her wins are against some fighters who have bad losses. For instance, one of her wins also lost to two of the setup fighters that LFA uses to slow grow their real talent. Just from going off what things look like on paper to me I think Williams should not be counted out. It all depends on how good her grappling is because it seems like she has good striking. No matter the outcome, this is a fight i'm interested in seeing how things play out.

Ducote is a good but not exceptional natural athlete, who comes from a wrestling background, and you can see it in her fights. I like that she hits nice takedowns, and she has shown some real quality top control. She also has shown the ability to jump on and finish submissions very quickly. Like a lot of wrestlers though, she isn't quite as comfortable on her back, and she is a bit undersized at 125.

Standing she has fast hands, and throws with a decent amount of power. She's got a good leg kick too... but she has no head movement, and she's very stationary. I really think talking a Dillashaw lite approach would work well for her. Her lack of defense and movement cost her quite a bit against Ilmia, so hopefully it's been addressed.

I'm not entirely sure what this means versus Williams. Kristina is clearly a big 125er, and like Ducote seems to be a good but not exceptional natural athlete. Emily probably should avoid making this a kickboxing bout, she's much smaller, likely at a reach disadvantage, and doesn't hit as hard I think. I would look for Emily to go for takedowns, and wrestle Williams. Throwing some leg kicks in there may be a good idea as well, as slowing down Williams movement will help. I think a clinch battle will wear on Ducote because of Williams size, so it's important she hits the takedown.

Basically all we have seen from Williams at the pro level was a good striking attack, with a decent amount of power. In her last amateur fight she showed off a little wrestling and grappling, but her opponent was able to press her and take her down. (In Williams defense, the cage was absolutely tiny) I wasn't overly impressed by Williams ground game, you can tell she is still learning there, and that's ok, but it's something to worry about versus Ducote.

Williams basically needs to repeat what she did versus Hardy, but watch for takedowns at the same time. She's gonna be heavier, and her punches and kicks definitely have enough sting to rattle Emily. Range is also important here, look for Williams to stay at kicking range. She really enjoyed having a large cage in her Bellator debut, and I suspect we see that again here.

Prediction wise, I would say Ducote is the safe bet, but only cause I haven't seen much from Kristina.

According to the translation, she's getting treatment for shingles. That probably makes her the first fighter in the UFC to fight while under a shingles attack. Brave chick.

I noticed another women's fight added to Pancrase 293 this weekend. I don't recall it that has been mentioned so I figured I would post it.

Edit. I was thinking of the Williams vs. Ducote fight back when it was first likely to happen.

Williams will likely keep a lower stance against Ducote then she did against Hardy, that will slow her offense down a bit in combination with likely using far fewer kicks. Controlling the clinch and making Ducote pay for shots and entries into clinching will be important to her keeping the fight standing. If Williams can get her head under Ducote's and using her good knees and elbows in and leaving the clinch she ought to beat up Ducote. That and pushing off of clinching if possible.

Ducote is the best wrestler Williams has faced though and her serviceable stand and fairly good top game. If Ducote can get it down she has a decent shot at winning the fight. Interesting to see how Williams holds up in a grueling fight as she is the bigger and taller fighter. The threat of a takedown could help Ducote out with Williams striking if she can make Williams hesitate to throw hard.

That ought to be a fun fight and I am looking forward to it.

Bellator with the Pico treatment for Williams..
Not sure how that will go, depends on her TDD. Will be rooting for her, appreciate that courage. Most fighters, specially Bellator men, would prefer to keep the momentum going fighting some can next.

Agreed. I recall reading about that talent share a while ago so I figured that was the connection. Looking forward to seeing what else comes of it. Glad to see Takayo Hashi getting a fight too.

Still adding stuff to that list. Just noticed another women's fight on that last card. And at 195lbs too. Big women.

Dama de Ferro means "Iron Lady" to the ones interested, Pedrita would be "little rock"

Looking forward to these 2 fights, and props to Valentina for making championship weight at her FLW debut in UFC. ;)

Not that she needs to but I’m rather confident Valentina could make 115

Paige VanZant is a well-conditioned, athletic, agile, explosive, physical and durable fighter. In terms of measurables, she is capable of competing with the very best fighters in two weight classes. So, given her unique blend of attributes, how is she not a legitimate contender or a champion?

Some critics have attributed it to tough weight cuts that hindered her at strawweight. In her first foray into the flyweight division, it’s been attributed to the broken arm that limited her ability to fight a balanced fight, much less a busy one. Both perspectives are incorrect.

Yeah, skill. She focuses more on conditioning than she does on integrating fundamentals.

I got Shevchenko UD and Viana SUB (R1 or 2) for tomorrow. I don't think Cachoeira can win this fight, unless she lands some miracle that shakes Valentina which I don't see happening, Shevchenko takes a dominant decision and makes her case for a title shot IMO. Viana on the other hand has some weird striking (kinda Ronda-ish) so I can see her wanting to take this to the ground with Stevenson. Stevenson's winning streak consists of opponents with a combined record of 0-13-0. I think Viana's got this.

If Shevchenko does win then I won't be surprised if she shows up as #1 on the rankings come Wednesday. I dunno what Eubanks' status is but Valentina pretty much has a title shot under her belt if she gets the win here, if not a TS then a title eliminator at the least... probably against Murphy who's coming off a win against Honchak.

Completely forgot about her. I’m assuming it’ll be at 125, I wonder who they match her with.
