Official Women's Division Discussion #25

Interesting. I agree FLW has surpassed BW, and there's still some talent left to debut in UFC like Maia, KGB, Kuma, Lipski, Nakai (at least in her weight class), maybe Weili Zhang if she chooses to fight at FLW etc

UFC should invest more at Bantamweight. Do some global scouting and bring 4-6 new fighters, at least.

^ ^ Sadly, they don't see that. If they did then they would have likely raided Invicta by now and have taken a board Pa'aluhi and Rincon at the very least. I'm sure both Kaufman and Lehner will be signed and Kianzad if she can break that losing streak. ^ ^

There's a couple of Bantamweights on the rise, I wouldn't say UFC ready yet. I'd say they give them a few years. There's quite a few in the Eastern European scene and one in Africa that I can think of. Taila Santos needs to get back in action so she can put herself on the radar too.

SW has rised to the top and rightfully so. The best women's division in the UFC at the moment in my opinion.

I think it's too soon for Rincon and Pa'aluhi isn't that good, i'd keep her at Invicta as a gatekeeper. Kianzad doesn't make weight and is struggling to get a win recently..

I agree Kaufman and Lehner are good enough but when yeah when i said "global scout" i'm thinking more about bantamweights outside Invicta, fighting at regional lv/smaller shows. Taila is awesome, she already became a mom, right? Looking forward to see what's next for her.

SW has been the best division for a while, at least 2 years, it's on fire now since JJ lost.

That's a good question, I have some theories but I can't say I have an answer. I think a big part of it is that MMA kicking is heavily influenced by the Brazilian style of kickboxing which was made famous by the Chute Boxe fighters. Generally speaking they didn't really pivot when kicking, rather, they'd step, turn, and plant their lead foot out to the side to load & open the hips then whip the kicking leg through. Bas Rutten teaches this method as well. I think where the problem starts is some details got lost when everyone else started copying their kicks; they don't turn the foot out properly when stepping into the kick so they lose the power from the hips, they try to throw straight from the stance with no step and get the angle wrong, and so on. So for a while we had fighters from a TKD background like Anthony Pettis and the original Chute Boxe guys (Shogun) being the ones with the best round kicks.

I think a good round kick, especially a Thai style one is just something that's not well understood in MMA. Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu has been fighting in Thailand for years and it was only recently that she had her "ah-ha!" moment with round kicks. She wrote a really nice article about it. http://8limbs.us/muay-thai-thailand/golden-kick-how-to-improve-your-thai-kick Not surprisingly, both Shevchenko sisters throw their kicks that way, as do Pettis and David Teymur on the men's side.

Yeah, it really shows who actually came up MT. I am not bashing dutch kickboxing or anything similar. Many fighters have done exceptionally well with that as their base. But you would think something so fundamental would be taught as, well, fundamental. You have a bit more speed throwing Dutch-style, but not only do you tend to have a bit less power your balance is off should you over-rotate (miss). I also allow that my MT bias may slightly color my opinion.

You think Chute Boxe had the best round kicks? I mean, they were fast but did not seem to have the power a traditional MT round kick has. Fine when throwing low, and faster to hit when targeting, say, the head but also easier to check.

On another note, why does hardly anyone (other than Barbosa, obviously) switch when they throw a switch kick? They step, or half-step, then throw, instead of quickly switching. You lose both speed and power like this.

And you are wrong. Baars doesn't have good clinch knees, as has been pointed out already, her clinch work is weak. Her balance is lacking and she doesn't use good grips and posture control. She was barely holding even against Angela Whitley (who??) in the clinch, either Shevchenko sister would badly abuse Baars with clinch throws & dumps, which by the way are the highest scoring techniques in MT other than a knockdown. What Baars has is a good step-in knee to catch opponents sleeping at longer range and a counter knee that works well against fighters like Cyborg who rush in recklessly, clinch knees, nope.

Sidenote: is it just me or is the legend of Baars like the legend of Buakaw? If you follow Muay Thai you'll know what I mean..

It is not just you.
:)

Baars does have beautiful step knees. Plus that one she timed Cyborg with was a thing of primal elegance.

Well yeah I guess one could say Rincon needs to get a couple more fights under her belt but I'd take Pa'aluhi for the sake of depth. She could very well be a low top ten fighter in my opinion. I'd agree with you about Kianzad also.

I get the whole "global scout" idea. Hence why I brought up the Eastern European and African scenes. I just think some of the fighters I have in mind need some time, and their records are only made up of 2-3 fights so I'd like to see them get some experience before making such a big move. They should really dig into the Brazilian regional scene, I doubt they had any idea Vieira would end up where she is now when they first signed her. I'd like to see them pick up Karolline Rosa (she's fighting Larissa Pacheco this month) and maybe Gisele Moreira.

I also didn't know Santos became a mom so congrats to her! (I guess that's why she was out for so long). Hope we see her back in the cage soon!

I'm sure the UFC have already contacted some of the fighters we all want to see in the octagon. I was reading a Lipski interview a few days back and she mentioned how the UFC got in touch with her twice and how she's stuck between re-signing with KSW (she has one fight on her current contract with them left) and signing with the UFC. I guess the better offer will be the one she goes for. I would not be surprised if they've contacted some of the FNG fighters or Zhang already.

They finally cut Kailin :(
Kinda sad, as she seemed like a nice person and iirc her fights were usually quite entertaining. But still, out of 7 UFC fights she only got 1 win...

They shouldn’t bring Pa’aluhi up until she proves she can at least win the invicta belt.

Milana Dudieva (11-7), will now face fellow UFC veteran Christina Marks (8-9) in a flyweight contest.

She is paying the price for past mistakes. Her record is not pretty because she took a lot of not smart fights early in her career. Now that she has been doing well overall she manages to fail at the worst possible moment. She breaks my heart as a fan because you want for good things to happen for her but she always fumbles it at the 1 yard line.

Now she has been going crazy for BJJ since getting married to a BJJ guy. The problem is she has the same exact faults as Dern. Her striking and wrestling needs serious improvement. BJJ means nothing if you can't get the fight to the ground. This is what made Ronda special. She could not wrestle due to bad knees but she replaced wrestling with Judo and her style of Judo complimented her superior ground game.

I don't know where Kaitlin Young at Invicta got the logic
of booking Flyweights at Strawweight since Christina Marks
& Milana Dudieva are both big Flyweights that have never
fought at 115 lbs before or have made the weight.

i think kaitlin young books fights with the aid of a dartboard, some of her matchups are bizzare.
