Official Women's Division Discussion #25

Juarez is good. Threw some excellent teeps, leg kicks, good punches & even some spinning back fists. She was game & hung in there to the end.

I scored it for Lipski & the judges agreed - unanimous decision. Lipski was better at winning the clinches, throwing meaningful hard punches, going for submissions, hurt Juarez a few times (knocked her down at least once), controlled the cage and pace. She continues to impress.

Even though she still won, it irks me a bit that it will come up as a split decision win on Ketlens record

I have not watched Cats fight yet but after hearing she lost it makes me sad that the girls that got me interested in WMMA have not been able to evolve with their division. Ronda, Miesha and Cat are the main reason why I am such a WMMA fan today. The end of Strikeforce to the beginning of 135 in the UFC will probably always be the most exciting time for me as a fan of this sport. In my opinion, Invicta was also at its peak during this time period.

Cat is 35 and coming off a huge layoff, is normal and I think Miesha just lost her passion, she was talking about retirement before she won the title the second time.

Also, I can't believe Ketlen "Tiny" Vieira won with such a massive size disadvantage! :P

I honestly have no idea whatsoever why people pay to see Cyborg eventing (<- not going to even say main-eventing) outside some weird fetish thing about male on female violence cause that is pretty much the closest thing one can get on that front legally. I know a bunch on the heavies seem to pretend to be her fans cause they hate "WMMA", but... fuck this shit. Human cock-fighting at its worst.

And my plan for the fights went wrong badly - fell asleep accidentally and woke up for the Cyborg mauling, were the two other fights worthy? At least Yoder/Dern was close?

Yoder/Dern was close?

One close round, two rounds that weren't. Yoder won a round comfortably and Dern got one comfortably as well.

As for Cyborg's fight, it started out interesting and then Cyborg got pissed at being grappled and lit Yana up on the feet once they finally broke the clinch.

Yeah, that was an easy fight to judge. Cat was game until the end, but the size and technique of Ketlen were too much for her early on. That throw she hit on Cat was sweet. She does seem big for the division, I hadn't really heard of her prior to the McMann fight but she has 2 solid wins back to back now.

Dern showed why people are excited to see her late in the 3rd, but you could see she is clearly lacking in many areas. Striking is definitely sloppy, but she should work on her chain wrestling to get the fight to the ground sooner. Yoder was piecing her up and could have taken the fight with a little more activity and avoiding the late takedown in the 3rd.

Cyborg does what Cyborg does, lol. Props to Yana for going for it on the ground early, but once Cyborg hit her with the power shots it was a wrap. Amanda Nunes fight is the only one that makes sense going forward.

I like watching Cyborg fight.

Yeah, Yoder put up a good challenge.

Cat was outclassed but was game.

I feel like Alliance MMA has changed Cat's style too much. She was initially standing orthodox when she normally fights southpaw. She was switching stances trying to figure herself out.

She really started to turn things around the last round but it was too late for her to work for a finish.

She should fight Bethe or McMann and get a quicker turnaround.

I still love the post about Vieira's lack of size, it was a classic. Reminds me of a line from a game I play.

"Tis so small, it's no threat to us." - one of your AI controlled teammates after seeing a monster swallow a male companion 3 times her size.

I like watching Cyborg fight.

Each to their own, I guess. But I am genuinely curious as to why? I mean sure, there is the Violence that really is not there for other fighters booked for the women's divisions, but she's hardly technical and I get nothing out of her bull-rushing girls who stand no chance of survival with her winged strengthpunches. Maybe I am biased and do not see something that "is there", but outside of novelty value/circus sideshow, she really brings nothing into the octagon for me (trying to write this as neutrally as I can, he he). At least if the booking was correct and it would really be a fight instead of a "fight", there would be sport-based interest, but now we don't even get that (except the Holm fight, which went the distance, quite tellingly).

Anyway :)

There were flashes of what made Cat great in the past, but unfortunately they were just moments of what could've been. Her distance striking was never that good but man, it was so slow and sloppy in this fight. Ok body kicks, but the punches were like WMMA from 10 years ago. I thought she did well in the clinch with her knees and she was hurting and wearing down Vieira in the 3rd, but she just doesn't have the explosiveness and snap that she once did.

Vieira's wrestling and grappling is no joke. I think she might be the biggest threat to Nunes if she can tighten up her striking defence a bit. She has solid takedowns, good transitions, and strong top control game that just sucks the life out of her opponents. Gas tank seems a bit questionable, but it might not matter if she can force a grappling heavy game against Amanda.

Dern vs. Yoder went about as expected. Dern still has little to no knowledge of clinch takedowns, she doesn't know how to use her over/underhooks and when she had the single leg she was trying to lift with her back horizontal and her hips way out in space. That's never gonna work, you gotta get the hips in close and get your feet under you so you can put real oomph into the lift, DC and Jessica Andrade are textbook examples of how to do it. Dern squeaked out a win but she's got a lot of work to do, fortunately the SW division is pretty deep so they can take their time matching her up and slowly moving her up the ladder.

Seeing an athlete who is so far above her competition.

That's a bummer for Pennington, if they decide to do that. Hopefully it does not happen. Having a real division get sportswise derailed by Cybro related shenanigans would be a real pity.

yeah but better to see it in Brazil when both have time to prepare, rather than in July when Nunes would have less than two months to prepare after facing Pennington.
