I saw this film recently and was mesmerized by the cinematography. This is the purest form of filmmaking I ever witnessed. And perhaps Mads Mikkelsen's greatest acting performance. Nicolas Winding Refn created a masterpiece.

Let the conversation begin.

That shit has been in my Netflix queue forever.

Need to watch it.

I love the movie. I was completely transfixed by it. It's totally unlike anything you will ever watch.

Loved it, wasn't what I was expecting when in saw it. Might watch it again tonight

Tried watching this awhile back. Was some odd combination of strange & boring. Perhaps I'll give it another shot someday.

Something to note. In Norse Mythology it's told that the Cheif of all the Gods -- Odin -- would take the shape of a human and walk the earth. Odin was, incidently, one-eyed, even when in human form.

So in Valhalla Rising, we have a mute, mysterious, probably magical, one-eyed man as our protagonist. And he goes off with a bunch of Christians on a Crusade that lands them in North America.

What the hell this is supposed to symbolise -- I have no idea.

I saw it a long time ago only because I recognized Mads' name in it, not knowing what it was supposed to be. For whatever reason, I thought it was just boring. Ol' One Eye...brown eye

Gotta say, the mushroom trip butt rape stacking rocks scene was a little needless.

The movie bored me to death.

After the disappointment of OGF I was about to give up on Refn. I'm glad I saw VR. The film was shot so beautifully even though the subject matter was brutal.

I watched it a few times and figured it was just an artistic take on some of the early Viking contact in North America. I never gave it much thought other than that, just an expedition with a violent end. Perhaps the dude was supposed to be Odin.

Mads was awesome, as always, but it didn't live up to my expectations. I watched that and The Hunt within a few days of each other. I thought The Hunt was better.

One of the most boring "artsy" flicks I've ever seen. Wanted to like it. Just couldn't.

I like that kind of visual meditation shit (Terence Malick is the man) but yeah, The Hunt was superior.

my only nitpick is they sail the atlantic ocean in a dinky ass little boat and seemingly dont hit rough waters once.

I'm going to buy the Blu-ray on Amazon so I can view behind the scenes and interviews.

It would be a interesting film to listen to the commentary while watching, though it might spoil it. Its a stange film that has a unique feel. It's so overlooked, this thread might be the first reference I've seen since it came out.
