Official Judo Thread VIII

Hmm well I asked to look exactly the same, but it's slightly straighter. Basically the septum was smashed all the way over to the side internally, resting against the bone, and then it bent back across the other way (!). Total mess inside, even though you couldn't tell much from outside. Couldn't breathe an iota through one side, and only a little bit through the other.
I couldn't not put up with that; I hate having a blocked nose. Even when I don't have a cold I always keeps some nasal decongestant spray by my bed, because if I can't breath through my properly because my sleeping self just will not open my mouth to breathe, which translates to dreams about suffocating.

Welcome to my life, an endless cycle of suffocation nightmare.

It's been like three years now, and I still feel like I don't know wtf kuzushi is...

Do you guys find that weight lifting makes much of a difference to your grappling strength over just doing body weight exercises?

I know that's a noob101 question but I'm just curious.

I find something help more than others. For example, high rep kettlebell work does nothing for me, apart from -vely Impact my recovery. "Speed lifts" (like 30% 1RM squat jumps) do *something* but the carryover isn't clear. Bodyweight stuff definitely works for me (variations of simple pushups, pull-ups, squats), as do elastics.

I tend to agree with Marcello Garcia on this, who suggests that if your S&C impacts -ve'ly on your grappling, just grapple more and exercise less. I've always liked a minimalist approach and for me, bodyweight fills that role. There are so many parameters you can vary (leverage, speed, type etc) that it can keep you entertained for a long time.

Oh, dude, I hear ya. I'm Sankyu right now and some training sessions still make me feel as if I'm Judo-retarded. Like I don't even have a human-level understanding of 'how do judo'. I'm at, like, dolphin level, at best.

I'm gonna go ice up.

In the process of grading to Ikkyu right now and I don't know a goddam thing either

It's pretty elusive. I only have maybe 2-3 throws where I can really get good kuzushi and know that I'm going to get the throw as soon as I enter because I can feel uke's balance already broken. You just know it when you have it.

Looks like I'm in good company. Tell me if I'm the only who feels this way.
It's like...
I "know" what kuzushi is, but not really.
I "know" how to generate kuzushi, but not really.
I "know" how to avoid giving my opponent kuzushi, but not really.

Since I've returned from my hiatus... kuzushi (how does that work?), it took me weeks to remember to do the wax off defense to the noob cannon over the shoulder grip, yoko osoto (which used to be my highest percentage throw that I could reliably hit on almost anyone) is a lost cause.

On the plus side, at least now I know that Korean morote can be my new go to. I can spin out of stiff arms, few people know how to defend it, and K morote > o soto is money.

I definitely know what kuzushi is, I just can't generate it on more than a few throws with any consistency. I think one reason uchi mata has always been hard for me despite my love for it is that I've never developed a real feel for where I want uke's balance to be to pull it off. Osoto gari I can feel it, I make you take a step forward and you resist leaving your weight slightly back, and then I enter and pull you down and back to emphasize that and you can't get your feet under you and I just have to reap and drive to finish. Tomoe nage I can feel it, I get my grips and starting moving forward and to the side, and as I pull you I get your center of gravity slightly forward over your hips and I slide under to throw. For ashi waza, I get you to take a step and as you commit your balance to your stepping foot I sweep it out from under you, when I'm on I really feel the weight start to transfer and can pretty consistently catch you. I can sometimes feel the center of gravity out of place for sasae and ouchi, but I've never found a big forward throw where I can really feel it. I pretty much just get you moving and pull like hell, which is why I think neither uchi mata nor seio nage have ever worked well for me with any consistency despite years of practice.

Worlds longest sankyu here (got in 07 I think with a 3 and 2 year gap in training) and yes still get frustrated on the whole kuzushi thing.

On a side note, had a Nikkyu i have never seen compete tell me the other day my Osoto wouldn't work in competition....never mind the fact I've won more matches in novice and advanced divisions both seniors and masters with it for Ippon and it was honed by a Yamashita clinic...

Next time I can get him in randori I'm spamming it...

Mentioned the comment to the Coach from my first team and he was personally offended. Then we laughed.

Bulgarian Ivelina Ilieva just captured the gold in 57 kg, women, Worlds in Sofia.
Woohoo!

(paragraphed for my dyslexia)

I meant in the sense that I cannot consistently move my body in the manner necessary to generate kuzushi. Instead, I have flashes of comprehension.

I think I'm a bit like you in that I'm having issues with getting the kuzushi for my forward throws. The ones I usually get are rear throws like K morote, o soto, o uchi, ko uchi, ko soto... I've found that I go for the big forward throws A LOT, but I never quite get uke's balance off enough for them to work, so I end up going for a rear throw as they adjust their weight backwards in response to my forward throw attempt...

... and just like that, I think I know what I need to do if I want to be a big forward throw guy. I'm a goddamn idiot.

In a street fight, which judo throws would you use? What grips would you take? Do you guys think it's realistic to get a sleeve grip in a real fight?

I was thinking ashi waza w/o the grips. Maybe simple throws like o goshi, uki oshi? I think tai otoshi and harai goshi would work well too.

Would you guys try Ippon or Morote Seoi Nage?

The only throw I've used in a street fight is Kosoto gake. It's my go to instinct throw, I just grip wherever I can in contest or street fights apparently. Usually lapel/chest and belt/arse.

I personally wouldn't do any throw I need to drop to my knees for or give up my back with a risk of not controlling their body ie. No seoi nages etc. Hip throws with an underhook are good though.

My coach told me to use ashi waza next time I get in bother. I'm reluctant to use throws like osoto incase I smash someone's head off the pavement.

Whatever you're best at, that fits the situation.

Well gentlemen, this is it. Tomorrow I leave for Marine Corps Recruit Training. In 13 weeks I will return a United States Marine.

Everybody be safe while I'm gone.

What method of service are you going for? Infantry, or one of the b-team trades?

:)

I kid.

Good luck, dude!
