From what I remember about the story Bam Bam went into it under the impression it was a work, but found out it was going to be a shoot at the last minute and decided to go through with it anyway. It was on a card called U Japan and was held as an MMA (NHB) event.

If you watch the fight it doesn't look like much of a work either...
