Let me preface this post by saying that I am a leftist and that freedom of expression is not only a fundamental human right, but a principle worth countless lives. Many have paid the ultimate price for free expression and should be praised for the sacrifices they made. If you consider yourself on the left, this decision by Verizon should be appalling. This is clearly a politically motivated cancellation.
If you aren't willing to defend the ability for people to say what you find most repulsive, then you aren't free speech.
First they came for Alex Jones, which I argued against even back then.
Soon, any threat to the establishment narrative begins to be censored, especially those that contradict foreign policy blunders. If you don't defend speech rights when it comes to the most bad faith of actors, you have no right to complain when they come after you.
The big tech oligarchy only began censoring at government behest AFTER they were called to capitol hill and threatened by congress. That is what led to the "censorship-by-proxy" approach the US Government now enjoys. Now, whenever something is said that the establishment doesn't like, they use the implied threat of anti-trust action, criminal action or other congressional action as a stick to beat the big tech dog into censoring their users against their own interests. Its important to understand this dynamic before saying "its private companies, bro; they can do what they want." No, they cant. They were doing what they wanted before and kept getting threatened by the government to start censoring or else, and they complied out of fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders.
For those of you who believe this is unique to the United States, it isn't. 80% of the censorship that takes place in Chna is executed by private companies. They understand that if they don't act in the interest of their ruling class, it could be their end; looks like we just started to copy their model.
It seems like every year more and more anti-war websites are getting censored, not only by social media and video platforms, but now by payment processors (who are also acting at the behest of the establishment).
Chapo Traphouse - deleted from youtube
Consortium News - blocked by payment processors
Mintpress News - Blocked by payment processors
Jackson Hinkle - Demonitized by youtube and blocked by payment processors (including Venmo)
There are also countless instances where individual videos are deleted and channels given strikes that are later overturned and reinstated. Anyone who claimed lableak possibility was censored, and later vindicated. Anyone who said vaccines wont prevent spread, even though its what pfizers documents actually said, censored and later vindicated. Anyone who questioned the efficacy of masks, censored and later vindicated.
This is not how a free press functions. Noam chomsky did an interview the other day with russell brand where he stated that the United States is now officially at a point where we are censoring more than the soviet union did....its worth a watch.
TL;DR: This trend among "liberals" and democrats of bootlicking the establishment and cheerleading censorship is antithetical to freedom. Censorship is always, by definition a benefit to the established power structure; and you just wait until the political party of the political class changes and you're views begin to be censored. Its a terrible precedent. Liberals and Democrats have become so blinded by partisanship, that they have lost sight of their most basic of principles. Free expression is the most integral right to a functioning democracy.
Good post. After enjoying the Schadenfreude for a few minutes it dawned on me that this is a pretty slippery slope.
