Social NYT Covid reporter fired for racial slur "not hateful or malicious in intent" from 2019

America's reaction to the word has religious undertones. Slavery is the original sin, and saying the bad word is blasphemy. And even saying the word in a discussion that involves saying the word is blasphemy is blasphemous, i.e. even meta-discussion of the blasphemy is disallowed.

The human mind is prone to symbolic and religious thinking, people just transpose it to other things (Social justice, censorship) absent the ability to do it in a purely religious sense.

all words should be allowed
i'm white but part of an ethnic minority and i've been called names a lot growing up
would i want that word forbidden? hell no. that's retarded.
you can't control your emotions so you have to have the state punish other people because you are a little bitch?
fuck outta here with that bullshit.
grow up.

Americans really dont know how words are used in rest of the world

Especislly eastern europe or asia

Its a lottery jackpot to be minority in usa

I'm looking forward to the day when white people's shadow casting on minorities will count as oppression

What they reported was true, no?

There is no context in which it is ok for a wh*te to use that word, sweetie.

Assuming this is sarcasm, but...

There is a difference between "using" a word and "saying" a word. Even a slur. Discussing a slur, and saying the word out loud during that discussion, is not using a slur.

To pretend the two are the same is bullshit.

You're entitled to your bullshit, don't get me wrong. But I don't have to eat it up with a spoon. It's all yours. Enjoy your lunch.

I remember back in high school in the early 2000’s we had to read Native Son for American History class. My teacher was an older white man, Mr. Hennessy, and as he was reading the books back cover to us he came across the line “...he was a :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: in a white mans world.”

there were a few giggles from the all black class, but looking back, if that would’ve happened in the past couple years I expect Mr. Hennessy would’ve lost his job and been socially demonized. I guess what I’m trying to say is context matters.

I’m usually one for nuance and context but it should be plain and simple to just not say the word. If people want to gamble on whether it will have blowback and possibly hurt their careers, they are free to do so. Seems like there’s an easy way to avoid it.

High School Teacher A Little Too Eager To Bust Out Racial Slurs Whilst Reading To Kill A Mockingbird

Rife with symbolism, and themes of social justice, morality and destruction of innocence, To Kill a Mockingbird not only earnt itself a place in pop culture but quickly became a staple favourite for high school essays.

However, despite its success and praise from critics, many have called for the 1964 classic to be taken away from reading curriculum for its candid exploration of racism – which is a fancy way of saying the book contains quite a few racial slurs.

Though banning the books seems akin to turning a blind eye to modern American history and avoiding an uncomfortable discussion, the fear that racially charged language could make some students feel marginalised is something that should be acknowledged.

But one person who takes no umbrage at this novel is English teacher, Mr Andrew Mathieson.

In fact, he’s quite looking forward to what he considers a ‘cathartic release.’

You see, as someone who feels quite marginalised for being one of the few male teachers at his school, Mr Mathieson gets quite the kick out of saying a slur to a group of impressionable students.

Because if anyone objects, he can just feign ignorance with the good ol’ ‘I’m a boomer and I didn’t know’ card.

Adding that he’ll make sure to stress that the word should only be used in a ‘historical context’, Mr. Mathieson assures our reporter he has no concerns about his student’s reactions as ‘you can’t sugar coat the past.’

More to come.

I think its weird that youre arguing for your right to say the word
Just dont say it, it aint that fuckin hard

It's a dumb assumption that anyone who is pointing out stupidity is doing it with some ulterior motive to be permitted to use slurs.

I've never used the slur and, although I have said the word a handful of times in the relatively distant past when reading a passage from a book or perhaps quoting some horrible racist statement someone else made for the purposes of calling out the horrible racist who said it, I don't care to ever say the word again in my life. As you say, "it ain't that fuckin hard" to just not say it.

But that doesn't mean I can't read something like this, recognize the utter stupidity of it all, and call out that stupidity.

Fuck you telling me your life story for?
I dont give a fuck

I dunno. You made a pretty bold blanket statement suggesting that anyone calling out bullshit here is just doing so to forward an agenda in hopes of being permitted to use racial slurs.

For some reason I felt that an attack of that sort on one's character warranted a bit of a nuanced response. Go figure.

In hindsight, I suppose it should have been abundantly clear already that you are rather too stupid to bother engaging with on any level above blanket statements and name calling.

My bad. Carry on.

Agreed, just don't say it. People need to be aware of that in this day and age regardless of context.

Do you think firing someone for using the word the way he did is appropriate?

Yes. Don't fucking use that word.

Don't say the word and there isn't a problem.

Please point out where I made that bold blanket statement

Don't say the word and there isn't a problem.

I have no intention of saying the word.

What's that got to do with calling out the stupidity of people who can't tell the difference between the word being used as a slur and the word being said in a discussion about the word?

Just because I have no intention or desire to say a word that is going to have these sorts of outsized effects regardless of context doesn't mean that it's somehow out of bounds to discuss the sheer ridiculousness of the situation.

Dude did something I wouldn't do. He also did something that he should have known carried risks. He also did something that he should have understood might even make some people feel offended or belittled.

But that doesn't change the fact that the people who did feel offended or belittled felt that way not because he did anything wrong but because they are stupid.

All of those things can be true at once.

Okay... now you're trolling. Right?

(Please tell me you're trolling.)
You really need to work on your reading comprehension
Nothing in that post has anything to do with anyone calling out anyone elses bullshit, it was merely a statement of fact that its a bad idea for whites to use that word and clearly that bothers some of you as you can tell by the responses, including your own
The irony of you trying to call someone else stupid is really quite rich and delicious

And this is why I bothered to clarify that I have no interest in using the word.

But again, blanket statements.

Yeah you are an idiot or like 85 if today you are still asking 'hard R' vs '****a' question but saying the words. They also briefly mention six people on the trip reported he made sexiest and racist comments... Between that and the timing seems like something else is going on.

Is this malicious or racist intent here?
