Media Nunes vs Cyborg: One of the most electrifying KO's in UFC history

Cyborg got caught while also having a bad gameplan going in. Still a much better fighter + better resume than Nunes.

Nunes has many more embarassing losses than Cyborg herself getting lit up by Pena and Zingano. Got embarrassed on the feet by GDR as well and hurt every time she got touched. Plus the "wins" vs. Valentina where she looked done at the end of the 3rd round in the first one while a majority thought she lost the second.

Meanwhile Cyborg just got a very clear UD over Pacheco who would've manhandled a prime Nunes in her current roided out form. UFC smear campaign really did Cyborg and her career/accomplishments dirty (5 belts in all the manjor women's orgs over a two decade period?!) and made sure no rematch would take place.

Nunes' best victory by far. The only one to defeat Cris Cyborg in a span of 19 years and 30 fights.

Was satisfying to see Wanderlei in a dress and heels ktfo’d like that.

In my head Nunes rocked her 3 times; watching this back it looks more like 7 times. She fucked Cyborg like never before or since.

Could the Zhang Weili from the Tatiana Suarez fight level of skills and physicality win vs Amanda Nunes in your guys opinions? Let's say Weili would fight in a weight that would better accommodate her in terms of maximizing power and not debilitating her movements too much.
Style-wise, I think Weili would be a terrible matchup for Nunes, but size matters. Nunes would have a massive reach and strength advantage...

No, and of course the lowest weight class those two could possibly fight would be at BW.

Right now, I think Weili would beat every UFC SW/FLW on the roster.

But moving up two (three) divisions to fight a two division UFC champion?

Pretty much a 145 lbs fighter vs a 115 lbs fighter.

Nope..

Weili is in my top 5 fav wmma fighters ever. But Amanda is a whole other beast.. Period.

I still feel Cyborg threw it away. Even after the first and second knockdown she could have survived and recovered(If her muay Thai loss is anything to go by).

Too much pride and maybe the pressure got to her.

Yeah, Cyborg thought she could win a firefight against any opponent, found out it wasn't so.

She also found out that roundhouse/hooking punches take longer to get there than straight punches.
It depends. Some fighters have hand speed so superior to their opponent that it doesn’t matter what punch they select - it’ll always be faster.
But MMA striking is so primitive that this oversimplification works a lot of the time. In reality, it depends on where you are. Up close or at range? Straight punches need more space. But then when you do have enough room to throw them - there’s more range and they exist on the inside of the trajectory of looping punches. Up close, hooks are way faster.

Cyborg just needed to slow down and throw them at the right time (when Nunes was backed against the cage). If she couldn’t do that without Nunes escaping, just wait, time counter etc.

Agree to disagree but this was an absolutely lackluster fight for me. Cyborg bullrushes Nunes with an all time terrible gameplan and gets dropped in less than a minute? What a waste.

I had no issue with Nunes winning and wasn't really going for either but considering this is still heralded as some legacy defining win for Nunes, I feel like it's a bit misleading and that we really didn't learn that much that we didn't already know.

We knew Nunes had power... I would have greatly preferred if they had a rematch and actually fought for a while but of course, Cyborg was a difficult person to do business with according to Dana so Nunes became the defacto "undisputed WMMA GOAT" apparently despite having a history of gassing out. Whoever does business gets the hype in the UFC.

If someone thinks this was an amazing all time great KO, I can at least understand that but genuine LOL @ the person who said this was the GOAT WMMA fight.
Not only that, she got hurt a couple of times and just refused to concede any exchange. It’s like the second fight with TJ and Cody but worse.

1) Zhang-Jedrzejczyk 1

2) Literally any other fight
Joanna was a savage. We saw her win and smash people and be a champion, but you also saw her go to war when she was getting lumped up, and still giving it back. People forget, man.
There was a Wmma goat top 5 goat thread the other day, severe absence of her name in that thread imo!

Cyborg isn´t that technical she is just the Brock Lesnar of WMMA and other fighters duck when she is swinging. She literaly got no defensive awarnes while throwing hooks.

That gets into why Cyborg should have been strategic- this was the first time she fought someone she couldn't slug with. A firefight was the wrong way to go here, she just doesn't realize that until it's too late. You can see Cyborg trying to land with looping punches when she is getting knocked out in the fight, and the straight punches landing on her as she throws the looping punches.

This wasn't just a low-brow MMA striking thing BTW- there are some classic boxing matches where it was straight punch vs looping punches that made the difference. Beau Jack actually talks about this in some of the commentary around his fights in the 40s and 50s. His classic fight with Ike Williams was bolo punch vs straight punches.

I'm glad we got see to what happened when Cyborg finally faced someone good and not an unranked nobody half her size

Beautiful karmic retribution

I would say it was the greatest fraud exposing in MMA history, but most educated fans already knew she was a fraud to begin with, Nunes just proved what we already knew, and in brutal fashion.

M nes knocked her out with looping punches. TS thanks for posting this today. I watched it dozens of times but not in a while. Love the energy.

forgot it was over so quick, its great seeing the hammer being the nail for once

Yea it was a great KO, for sure. Amanda really is the one in WMMA. That said, Cyborg has also had an outstanding career. I’d consider them 1A and 1B.
