Basically NK launched missiles into SK water who responded by bombing their waters in return. It happened in response to military drills between the US and SK taking place along the border. At the very least you could say if this same thing happened 40 years ago there would be villages burning right now, not just a splash in a pond.

A barrage of artillery fire between North and South Korea across disputed maritime borders on Monday marked an annual show of force by North Korea intent on sending a message to the U.S. as it conducts military exercises nearby.

North Korea's missile launches into the Yellow (West) Sea followed by a threat of live-fire drills along the border "was really aimed at our policymakers, Republic of Korea policymakers and Japan," said Bruce Bechtol, a Korea specialist and professor of political science at Angelo State University in Texas.

full text in article but this part from it sums up the general opinion of it

Firing rounds into South Korea's territorial water goes beyond North Korea's usual responses. North Korea fired into the water to avoid casualties but still mark its territory and show its willingness to respond with force, Bechtol said.

Kim Jong Un need's to eat a Snickers by the sounds of it.

Yeah, that's what I'd call a high-functioning cold war. They both puff their chests, get to feel like they've shown strength, and no one gets killed. I'll take it.

Wolf tickets!

When the winter comes, North Korea will beg for food again.

I don't get north Korea. Are they really that delusional? South Korea on their own would likely defeat them in a war.

Honestly, we should just smash NK. Take them out once and for all and end this bs.

The North Koreans start this crap in late March-early April every year in order to coincide with the conclusion of scheduled military drills and the birthday of the nation's founder, Kim Il sung, on April 15th.

This was bound to happen. They'll inevitably follow up on this with blustery hyperbole and threats of turning Seoul into a sea of fire. Then everything will calm down in two weeks...until next March/April.

I could see a Monty Python type skit around two countries bombing each others water.

Hopefully it doesn't lead to a full blown shootout

I don't understand why the fuck it hasn't happened yet.

Here's why and I'm just the guy that's laying it out here..

#1. Seoul is well within striking range of NK. There'd be a lot of deaths if/when things pop off. How many South Korean/American deaths are too many to free the North?

#2. Seoul (and China for that matter) do not want 20+ million refugees at their borders overnight, who have to be clothed, fed, and just as importantly taught how to function in the 21st century.

If it happens, it'll more than likely happen internally within NK when someone says "Ok, I've had enough of this ISH and I really don't care if you kill me."

You'd think this area would be priority for Americans to set up defense systems.. but of course priority goes to Israel..

Backed by China?

But one of these days, they will cross the line and go too far. I wait for that day.

well they arent backed as much anymore. China got pissed off at them when they went crazy last year.

Besides NK is in desperate need of modernization

Heh, good. Makes a slip-up that much easier

Missiles deployed by North Korea are covering the entire area of the South, Pyongyang has deployed more than 600 short-range Scud missiles north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), with a range of 320 to 500 kilometers. In addition, 200 Rodong missiles positioned inland have a range of 1,300 kilometers, reaching every point in the South. North Korean Intermediate range ballistic missiles can also reach Russia, China, Japan and Alaska.

Until recently Seoul relied primarily on the U.S. air defense umbrella, comprising Raytheon
