'If someone had thought to coin the term "pound for pound" during this era, Dempsey would likely have been the reason why.'
That term was in fact around during Dempsey's time and well before, King, although it was mainly used when comparing food products and whatnot, and I personally haven't seen it associated with the sport of boxing until about a dozen or so years after Dempsey's death (1906 to 1907-ish...at the time it was referenced in the papers to guys like Gans & Ketchel in some manner or another).
Had it been associated with boxing (a boxer) during his time, Dempsey would have been a natural to fit the term, no doubt, and who knows...maybe he was in fact referred to as such at some point during his time (again, the term was around in print), only to see that possible reference lost over time.
Anyways, after finding the time to take it up, that was certainly a great read on a great fighter, King, so thanks a bunch for that.
The little bit above the last line is mainly for the twits who believe the "pound for pound" term was somehow "coined" specifically for Robinson, that's all.
im pretty young so havent looked into dempsey, but is it true that he never fought a black heavyweight?
