They locked the thread I bumped from when he was made SoD but the overall belief was that left and right was that Mattis was the best man for the job.

I trust Mattis more than any other official in the Trump cabinet. If he wants to keep the small number of soldiers there I absolutely believe he has reason to.

He's right hough. War with Iran (I believe that that is the ultimate prize for our neocon warhawks, with Mattis falling into that category. I could be wrong though) would be an absolute disaster. What we really need is an energy plan that gets us out of the region (yeah, I know' it's been said before. But it's the reality). Until that time, we will be beholden to whichever way the winds happen to be blowing over there at any given time.
Getting our broke debt ridden and war weary asses out of the ME is one of the reasons Trump was elected.

When has Mattis been for instigating war with Iran? He has issued harsh rebukes of their policy, warned them against aggression, and repeatedly talked about how the conflict would cost the US too dearly.

If Mattis was such an Iran hawk, why were the right wingers cheering him being defense sec in the first place? He was always regarded as the adult in the room.
