but what would you rather get? brain damage or (insert injury here)? Therefore if you try to punch me, any type of severe injury is justified, because its not as bad as brain damage.

Just about anything imaginable is "less" than permanent brain damage.

So as you can see, when people make that comparison, it clearly is a fair and reasonable one....lol

Damaging permanently a professional fighter's knee may prevent him from putting food on his family's table. Though brain damage in the long term is of course far worse for that fighter, it is an accumulating type of damage. Whereas if his knee is destroyed, it may end his career which will be good for him in the long term but deny his livelihood in the short term.
