it's the hipster thing to say that soccer is boring. and trust me, not only the unwashed masses watch it. it transcends educational groups - plumbers and phds alike watch it. I recommend a book, if you have the time or desire to explore the soccer phenomenon - "How soccer explains the World"

also, referring to the commercial, it is a boost for MMA to have it associated with football, although fleetingly, for an event such as the World cup. Surely, 99,9% of the people that see the commercial won't know who those two are, but the association matters.
