It's well established that Baroni was in really bad psychological shape at the time. There were multiple people saying he was out of it and not making a lot of sense. I don't think there is any question he had some serious CTE. His family was paying for him to stay locked up in a better lock up facility in Mexico last I heard, but that was a while back.
The Baroni story is a devastatingly sad story....
And I can't help but wonder how many similar stories we will just never hear about.
Baroni was just BARELY famous enough that his incident popped up on the algorithms.
How many "not as famous as Phil Baroni" but with every bit as much brain damage, give or take a little childhood trauma and or drug addiction/abuse/damage times the Square root of total concussions in fights and gym wars and bar fights and contact sports, etc... cases are there in the world which we will never hear about their downfall.
Fight finder and Wikipedia are chock fucking full of guys with loads of KOs.
For every 10-1 guy in the UFC with 7 KO wins, there are no name guys balancing out the loss column. For every KO win someone has a KO loss and every undefeated run has got a pile of victims... they are out there.
Guys who tried MMA, didn't have the God given Max Holloway chin, and got KOed a dozen times in the gym and maybe a few more in ammies or regional shows.
I'm sure there are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of them .
They aren't stars.
They are on welfare somewhere or homeless like Junie Browning, or in jail like Phil Baroni. Maybe the baddest dude in their cell block.
And who the fuck knows what havoc they have reeked on this world that just wasn't quite news worthy enough to make its way to the surface and creep into public conversation?
It's a fucked up thought that haunts me sometimes.
