Contrary to what many Sherbros contend, they both lack boxing skills, which may be partially why Conor thought he could beat Nate.
Quite simply, the success they've had is primarily due to BEING TOUGHER THAN THEIR OPPONENTS, and I'm including cardio in context with toughness because MMA is a full-contact sport and one who endures through the pain of extended battle is truly valorous.
RELAXING IS KEY when engaging a fight, and the Diaz brothers don't get rattled.
Take the Nate vs Cerrone fight... Cerrone was far too amped up; (due to Nate being in his head) he may have experienced an adrenaline dump early on...whilst Nate slapped him around the cage.
Anyway, as I was saying in regards to their lack of boxing: They don't even snap jabs and instantly get their hands back for defense...nor do they possess great lateral offensive or defensive movement...
Mind you, I'm not trying to shit on them by any means, I'm just putting things into perspective.
Conor saw a very open target in Nate and probably figured he could blast him out early...
...well, it's not that easy when your opponent is tougher than you are.
...it's not that easy when your opponent has a great chin.
Also of note as it pertains to this post, they seem to be naturally slow of hand and foot...as I imagine their bodies may be composed primarily of slow-twitch muscle fibers at least somewhat akin to naturally gifted marathon runners. (whereas fighters like Rumble and Romero have an over-abundance of fast-twitch fibers)
...which is PRECISELY why it would behoove them to work on things such as BOXING (as it pertains to MMA) and WRESTLING. Having a stronger base would be useful towards kicking...which they both utterly lack.
They could've (SHOULD'VE in my opinion, for their own well-being) focused on strength training (full body movements such as proper deadlifts/squats/wind sprints/etc which are some of the only ways to engage fast-twitch muscle fibers whilst releasing natural HGH) in order to enable wrestling skills needed to force the issue to the ground. (of course, they'd have to train for wrestling concurrently)
Look at Maia... He is a limited striker (to say the least, although he is working on it...or trying to) but he has somewhat improved as a wrestler as of late so he can more easily take opponents to the mat where his true skills shine. If only more fighters had the cool/calm/respectful demeanor that Maia has...(as opposed to "stars" like Conor and Ronda...) but I digress.
In the end, the Diaz brothers have indeed been successful in their MMA careers, (Nate is definitely on the rise) but had they focused on their weaknesses instead of relying on their toughness they could've been far better fighters... AWESOME BJJ (their ground game is obviously lauded) only goes so far if you struggle to actually use it...
That said, to reiterate, I'm really not trying to besmirch their name, as I appreciate what they do, (I always watch them fight and I recognize their warrior spirit) but their approach should not be mimicked from a success standpoint in terms of up and coming fighters who are training for MMA for example.
Anyway, WAR Diaz!
