Ngannou vs Prime Tim Sylvia

Christ the pendulum swing here is retarded. First people buy too much into Ngannou's hype, then they frantically try to adjust by lampooning him.

Sylvia sucks. He was part of the some of the most boring HW affairs in history and his best wins are a UD over a broken handed Vera and KO'ing a coke head Ricco (or I guess alternating wins with Arvloski). Francis has major holes in his game, obviously, but he would behead Sylvia.

Didnt know there was a prime Silvia

You should watch some old school fights.

Prime supplemented Timmeh would be top 3 HW in the UFC today.

He would stop Ngannou in the 2nd, and give Stipe a much harder fight.

I've always said that Tim Sylvia's legacy is chronically underrated.

I think the smart money would be on Francis just because of how much the sport developed these last 10 years, but Timmeh would have a good chance, and definitely has better cardio.

What does Francis do better than Prime Tim? I'd say Sylvia has a better jab, cardio, grappling defence and varied striking with head kick KO's.

Tim should box circles around him but Ngannou can definitely KO him.

Randy punched Tim in his face in the first round and it totally affected the rest of the fight. One of my favorite quotes is Dan Severn saying "Randy couture couldn't punch himself out of a wet paper bag."

Ngannou lands on Tim and it could be a really short night.

Tim went into that fight with serious back issues that ended up needing surgery.

First of all, how is your body feeling 10 days after your UFC 68 fight?

I got injured during the fight and I had a doctor's appointment today. I have a herniated disc in my lower back.

And this happened during the fight?

Well, I was injured before the fight and we weren't sure exactly what happened but we had an idea that that's what it was. I just got diagnosed with it today -- [I've] got a herniated disc pinching my sciatic nerve.

So, I couldn't train. I trained my [butt] off for the fight cardio-wise. But I couldn't do a lot of stuff on the ground because my sciatic nerve wouldn't let me.

Tim has less power but has a better jab and better TDD.
Timmy is the more complete fighter.

I remember Tim training at extreme couture while Randy was retired. There were rumors that Randy got a little tip from some snake in the grass that Tim's back was fucked up. So Capt. America decided to come out of retirement for a direct title shot.

Very convenient timing.

Sylvia had legit skills and power and his size caused people a lot of problems.

He completely shut down prime Monson, and has 2 wins over prime Arlovski and a young Rothwell.

Nog got really lucky against him, because he was getting absolutely wrecked before he pulled off his hail Mary sub.

Sylvias striking is still better than half the division today EG Struve, Volkov, Black Beast, Blades, Tybura and even Ngannou technically.

That's just it though...Ngannoe has a ton to learn and will greatly improve in the next year or 2...
He's 31. It's not like Ngannou is a young kid with lots of opportunity to grow.

I think Frank stops him in the 1st. Sylvia liked to trade, to much power.

Beats glass cannon, multiple KO’d, shopworn AA in 2017 = not as bad as people are making him out to be.

Has 2 wins over prime AA = sucked with no good wins.

Impressive levels of retardation imo.

You can fuck off with your bullshit, try hard nostalgia. One just started their career, another finished theirs. If Ngannou goes the Brett Rogers route, then we can properly criticize him. Thus far though, he KO'd everyone he met in the UFC and was decisioned by the champ that's finished AA, Werdum, and JDS in the first round.

Also, how in the hot gay fuck was that prime AA? AA was better when he had a career resurgence in '07. Oh yeah, 'prime AA', he was really coming hard off that win against... Justin Eilers - I can't believe Tim alternated wins with him! What a phenom!

People are making thread asking if Chael could grapple Francis because they're so eager to swing the other direction. I'm not saying he's the next ATG or anything, just that the shift is remarkably stupid - there's no middle ground. Tim was slow as all fuck and Francis is a terrible style match up for him.

I completely disagree. He had power and length - that's about it. Beating Monson shouldn't be a feather in anyone's cap and that was literally one of the worst fights to ever grace a PPV main event slot.

Tim was fortunate to exist in a time where all the other talent was fighting in PRIDE. The Nog analysis deserves some merit, but on the basis of Nog's entire career - you can't really say 'he was losing until he won', that was just how Nog was.

Completely true. But I think we can all agree that he came out in that Miocic fight looking like hot garbage from the opening bell. He was spastic and all over the place right from the start. I don't expect him to really make any major improvements in his overall game, but goddamn, it's not asking much to improve his fight IQ from that showing.

Prime Timmeh is a better fighter than Francis (e.g., more well-rounded, better grappler, better cardio). However, I'd pick Francis simply because of the style match-up. It would obviously be a striking battle and, because Timmeh was so slow, I think Francis would find his chin. But if Timmeh somehow made it out of the first round, I think he'd batter a gassed Francis.

After that first punch the rest of the fight was a grappling match

He's very young to the sport...remember, randy couture didn't even start mma till he was 34...so for a heavyeight, he's actually very young...He has a ton to learn...I'm just talking about basic punching technique...Not being off balance when throwing punches...shorten up his punches...things like that...he can pick that up in no time.

PRIME Tim would get my vote, tbh...keeps Francis honest with the jab, has better cardio and grappling to drag the fight out, Francis gasses, another decision win for the Maine-iac.

the Mercer KO featured an obese, post-Fedor (i.e. soulless) Sylvia. He weighed in at just over 310 for that fight...while a mere 11 months earlier he came in at 263 to face Fedor.

While he probably cut to 263, wtf did he do between those fights...have a 6-month training camp of all-you-can-eat buffets + zero workouts? damn.

Randy was a collegiate wrestler in high school and college, then wrestled professionally from the age of 24 until 34. That's at least 18 years of combat sports training before getting into MMA. Francis began his training for professional boxing at 26. That's a grand total of 5 years of combat sports training.

Randy and Ngannou have very different career paths.

But my point remains...31 is very young for a heavyweight...
