Francis details his injury in this video. It's a series in Youtube. It has 2 episodes now. But I think it's not very worth it to watch all and make full notes of it. Here are some interesting bits I found.

Everything was designed for me to fall and collapse — you know, not to come back. That was it. That was how it was designed. Like, ‘OK, that’s how it’s going to be, let’s go. The injury happened on Dec. 28, exactly three days after Christmas.”

Francis and Erick Nicksick said the injury happen when a fighter from Germany who they are not familiar with stepped up and spar Francis.

We were sparring and I think he got overwhelmed. He shot desperate like takedown you know, then when I tried to turn around, I heard the crack like on my knee. Right at that moment when you hear that on your knee, you know that something is happening, you know. But I was so warmed up that I couldn’t feel it, exactly, but I knew something's not going on. I was hoping that maybe 'ah it was just a bad feeling.'”

“I was willing to do anything possible for me to heal a little bit. I wasn’t expecting to heal up. I wasn’t expecting some magical solution to resolve the injury, but I was just hoping to get a little bit better, as much as possible. Technically, I couldn’t do anything. I wasn’t allowed to do anything where I had to pivot with striking, or anything where I would have to take a chance.”

In the episode 2, it was shown that Erick tried to persuade Francis to pull out from his fight with Gane. Francis persevere and keep on fighting. Very remarkable act, respect.

I hope Francis returns soon. He is one of the most exciting fighter in the UFC. Too bad a lot of things happened which caused him to be inactive. Anybody know who that German fighter (or Sherbro) is? He might be the future Goat.

Utterly pathetic.

Sure, buddeh. When the UFC hyped your ass to no end, before you fought Stipe the first time. Yes, all designed to make you fail. Or there’s the part where you blew off TC. Just so you could do whatever in France. That worked out really well for Penn, before the rematch with GSP too.

Fucking did it again too. Needing knee surgery, you delayed that for 2 months. Because you needed to go to Cameroon? Apparently surgery and a cast is much worse than doing whatever the fuck for two months on a wonky knee?

Come on man.. I blew out my knee. Just trying to walk was completely ridiculous. Who the fuck delays that shit to go on vacation instead? I had my surgery the next morning.

Playing the victim card is way too fucking much, man. Crying about only getting paid $600K. And yet somehow you left out that whole part where you literally blew off $7M?

Crying about being left on the shelf. So maybe accept that Volkov fight you turned down?

Is there literally anybody on this planet buying this guy’s bullshit anymore?

Brother Temple, I think you only read the title. He said that in regards to his injury, not the UFC.

A 36 year old coming off an ACL and MCL tear is a harrowing thought.

Yes sir, at any age it's nerve wracking having to recover and return to form! I do believe though HWT is one of the very few weight classes where it might be more feasible. Not as many fast paced wrestling/bjj scrambles, leg kicks or knee bar/heel hook attempts. With Francis's power and athletic ability i think he could remain very relevant and dangerous if he decides to return. It's a tough situation not only with the injury but the age as you mentioned. HWT and 205 are the two classes where age isn't as defying as the lighter weights. Historically there have been quite a few elite fighters staying relevant into their late 30's-early 40's. The power and pace of those weight classes affords older fighters opportunities to stay in the game.

For Francis its a double edged sword IMHO. Surgery in march of this year. So figure he's got 6 months of rehab and recovery which is right about this time. Will take another 3-6 months of mobility and training to get into fight shape and see if the surgical repairs hold up. Then its right back into the fire, he's not going to get a tune up fight. The Jones fight would be epic as it's just a match the fans want to see. So what does he do?

He already cleared out most of the division, and there's no real big fight to make besides JJ or a Gane rematch if he flatlines another 1-2 fighters. I think it comes down to desire at this point in his career. If he wants to fight and build on his legacy than i dont think much on earth could stop him. Then you factor the previous issues with the UFC pay, the disrespect he felt, and whatever else grievances he held..is it worth it?? Lot of time for the man to think. I would def like to see him return but i wouldn't hold it against the man if he hung em up.

Francis is pro-fighter pay.

By that he means HIS pay.
It is an individual sport. If he gets paid more that opens the door for other fighters to get paid more, because they can use Ngannou's contract/pay as an example. Since they don't have a union this is how fighter pay raises. Conor is also responsible for the increase in fighter pay. He was the first mma fighter making million dollar fight purses. Everyone that fought him made more money and now multiple fighters have made million dollar fight purses.

Exactly three days after Christmas? What does that even mean? Are there non exact days?

yes. there's 3 non exact days after christmas followed by 5 exact days before christmas that are within 1 non exact week on christmas 2 exact weeks after christmas which is 2 exact hrs before non exact new years eve.

get with the program.
