I play quite a few play to earn games. They are free but you don't earn much, but if you have approx 10 you'd probably get about 10 euro in crypto each week. Some also give you NFTs and I don't really see the point because they're reliant on the fact that someone has to buy them from you. So basically, an NFT is just an image that you sell and hope someone buys?

VGC 2023 write-up here: Square Enix believes recent blockchain volatility can benefit its game plans

Square Enix was one of the first major publishers to declare support for “blockchain entertainment”, which uses a form of digital ledger to effectively allow users to own, buy and sell digital items.

In its New Year letter last year the company committed to making blockchain and NFT games. Later in 2022, it announced plans to sell NFTs as part of what it calls the “first digital collectible art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans”.

In a new letter discussing its plans for 2023, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda has now said blockchain remains the biggest focus for its medium-term investments, despite what he called “volatility” in the blockchain space in 2022.

Matsuda argued that lessons learned and likely regulation to come could benefit the growth of the blockchain field and its plans to develop games based on the technology.

And SE is off to the NFT races with Symbiogenesis:

Symbiogenesis is the publisher’s first attempt to make a game using NFTs and blockchain technology, something that continues to divide players.

NFTs are unique non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain (a form of digital ledger), which effectively allow users to buy and sell digital products like in-game items or artwork.

According to new information provided by Square Enix, Symbiogenesis is described as “narrative-unlocked NFT entertainment”.

The company says the game is “a completely new form of NFT-based entertainment, where 10,000 collectible artworks meet real game utility”.

Square Enix claims that the 10,000 NFT characters that will be made availble will have a unique design, with various races and professions”, along with images that can be used as social media profile pictures.

I'm not saying NFT games are impossible to become successful. Just look at microtransactions/lootboxes becoming huge in sports games.

But NFTs are going to be implimented into something that's already successful, like those 'surprise mechanics' were imbeded into the online multiplayer of sports games. They wouldn't be successful being identified as 'Microtransaction/LootBox games' first with gameplay built around those revenue streams.

Imagine if Half-Life 3, or some other long-awaited sequel, was announced.... but a month before it comes out its revealed NFTs are within the game. The vast majority of everybody would just deal with it.

Don't get me wrong,

Square Enix set to launch Final Fantasy NFT trading cards:

The collection, which is called Final Fantasy VII Anniversary Art Museum: Digital Card Plus, consists of 207 cards.

Each pack, which costs ¥440 ($3.30), contains six physical trading cards as well as one ‘digital exchange card’.

This can then be redeemed for an NFT version of a card. Square Enix says it’s possible to get an NFT version of any of the 207 physical cards.

I am really struggling to understand NFTs... So you get a chance to acquire an NFT version of a card. What will be so special about that card? Some 3D effect that's unique? How many NFTs of that card will be available. How many total NFT cards? If 500,000 gamers buys a pack each, then that means there will be 500,000 NFT versions of the current 207 cards...? how does that make the NFT cards unique?.. Why would anyone trade for them???

VC firms are the majority holders of crypto and main investors in game studios. Because of cryptos lack of regulation its another way for them to fleece wannabe garage hedge funds and libertarians to secure return on investment.

TSM is expected to place their esports on hold: https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.c...ts-league-of-legends-championship-series.aspx

A funny story for those unfamiliar. TSM signed a exclusive sponsorship deal with FTX that renamed the org to TSM FTX. TSM's most renowned esports team is in League of Legends. Riot Games ruled shortly after that TSM werent allowed to change their name to TSM FTX. Riot Games then went behind TSM's back and signed a 96 million dollar multi-year sponsorship deal with FTX for sponsorship in League of Legends esport broadcasts.

Sega and US-Korea's Line Next team up to create new NFT gaming platform:

At odds with new partnership is a Sega exec publicly saying just last week that play-to-earn blockchain games are lame. Full article on that lives here from VGC team. Excerpt:

Sega is reportedly cooling its interest in blockchain gaming.

While it’s not dismissing the technology entirely, Bloomberg reports that Sega has shelved plans to develop its own blockchain games for the time being.

“The action in play-to-earn games is boring,” Sega co-chief operating officer Shuji Utsumi told the publication. “What’s the point if games are no fun?”
